Meghan Markle’s first Children’s Book, The Bench
The Bench, Meghan’s children’s book, is about the special bond between a father and son – as seen through the eyes of a mother. Meghan’s debut release for children is inspired by the relationship between her husband Prince Harry and their son Archie.
Meghan composed a poem for Prince Harry on Father’s Day in 2019, a month after Archie was born, and it became the basis for the book.
The illustrated book comprises pieces by award-winning artist Christian Robinson and the Duchess narrating the audiobook.
In a statement, the duchess said, “The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born.”
“That poem became this story.”

“My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the make-up, as much as it does with mine,” she continued.
“Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolour illustrations that capture the warmth, joy and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life; this representation was particularly important to me and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens.
The book is the latest in a series of enterprises undertaken by the Sussexes since their decision to leave royal responsibilities in 2020 and relocate to the United States to enjoy an independent life.
The duchess’ book isn’t her first foray into the world of literature.
She used to own The Tig, a lifestyle site, but it was shut down once she started dating Prince Harry.
The pair has founded Archewell, a humanitarian charity, and the duchess has lent her voice to the Disney nature film Elephant. They were inspired by Archewell to start a podcast with the same name, in which they hope to promote wellbeing and kindness.
In a statement, Mallory Loehr, publisher of the Random House Books for Young Readers Group, stated, “Meghan’s touching text explores the relationship between fathers and sons and undeniably tugs at the heartstrings that parents and caregivers feel.”
