Angelina Jolie Discusses Her New Teardrop-Shaped Breast Implants

Last month, Angelina Jolie said that she had earlier this year had a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction procedures. She made her decision after learning that she had a BRCA1 gene flaw, increasing her chance of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Breast cancer risk is reportedly increased by 87 percent by the BRCA1 gene mutation. The fact that Jolie’s mother, her maternal grandmother, and most recently her aunt all passed away from the illness added support to her choice in this situation. After a prophylactic double mastectomy, the risk of breast cancer falls to less than 5%.

Another topic of debate was Jolie’s decision to get “teardrop” implants.  Teardrop or shaped implants are contoured and are considered the most natural, both in look and feel.

This kind of breast implant, according to a recent NBC News piece, was chosen to give the new breasts a more natural appearance.

In order to conceal the incision lines, Jolie underwent three breast operations via the creases beneath her breasts. For breast augmentation or revision, breast lift, and breast reduction procedures, this is a typical site for the incision.

Her initial surgery was intended to save her nipples, and her subsequent complete mastectomy removed all of her breast tissue and placed tissue expanders in its place to create room for breast implants.

Jolie made the decision to split the breast implant component of her therapy into two procedures in order to get the optimum aesthetic results, despite the fact that many women elect to have their implants placed at the same time as the mastectomy. In order to provide room for the new breast implants after the mastectomy, the tissue expanders were gradually filled with saline.

Procedures that utilize the patient’s own tissue are alternatives to the aforesaid approach. To produce a new breast, skin, fat, or muscle can be removed, and since the restoration employs natural tissue, the results are often more realistic.

While some women choose to have their implants placed at the same time as their mastectomy, Jolie opted to undergo a third procedure to finalize their placement in order to assist guarantee the best cosmetic results. Additionally, donor skin was used throughout the procedure to shape and support the implants. All three operations took less than three months to complete from beginning to end.

“I was pleased to find her not only in good spirits with bountiful energy, but with two walls in her house covered with freshly assembled storyboards for the next project she is directing,” said Jolie’s surgeon, who paid her a house call four days later.

Jolie added: “I have been very happy just to see the discussion about women’s health expanded, and that means the world to me and after losing my mom.”
