Will Lilibet Diana ever become a Princess?
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have welcomed their second child, a daughter named after the Queen and Prince Harry’s late mother Princess Diana, to their California family, after their son Archie Harrison.
Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, the newborn infant, was born without a royal title. Just like her two-year-old brother Archie.
When Charles becomes king, however, they will both be entitled to Princess and Prince titles, as well as use of Her/His Royal Highness since they will have risen up the line of succession to become the offspring of a monarch’s son.
Only the children and great-grandchildren of the monarch’s straight male line shall get formal royal titles, according to the Letters Patent 1917, an ancient decree made by Queen Elizabeth II’s grandfather, George V.
When Prince George was born in 2013, an exception was granted for Prince William’s children. The Queen issued her own Letters Patent, guaranteeing HRH status and royal titles to all of William’s future children.

The children of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were not granted this exemption.
Given that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have stepped down from royal obligations, it’s unclear if they want to bestow such titles on their children.
After her brother Archie, who is seventh in line to the throne, Lilibet is the eighth in line to the throne.
When Meghan revealed in her explosive Oprah Winfrey interview that the Royal Family reportedly stripped Archie of his prince title before he was born, it caused widespread controversy.
The Duchess had stated that she thought the rules were being modified unjustly and unreasonably for him from the beginning of her first pregnancy.
‘In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, so we have in tandem the conversation of, “you won’t be given security, not gonna be given a title” and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,’ she told the talk show host.
Since the interview, royal experts have dismissed the allegations against palace staff, citing the 1917 law as the reason Archie – and now Lilibet – are not yet HRH.
Marlene Koenig, a royal historian, told Insider that Charles might issue his own Letters Patent, preventing Archie and Lili from earning royal titles.
This is partly due to the fact that the existing Letters Patent is outdated, as it solely refers to male-line children. However, it’s possible that it’s related to Charles’ rumored aim to “slim down the monarchy.”
According to Koenig, a British and European royalty specialist, future title recipients might be limited to “the children of the Sovereign, the children of the heir apparent, and the children of the eldest child of the heir apparent.”
After Prince Harry recently criticized his upbringing inside the Royal Family, it is unlikely that much will be revealed about the royal child.
Archie Harrison, the newborn’s older brother, is mainly kept out of the public eye, with the pair releasing few photos of the two-year-old since they left their royal responsibilities in March 2020.
Prince Harry recently made several remarks about his time as a frontline royal and his upbringing in the institution.
“I don’t think we should be pointing the finger or blaming anybody, but certainly when it comes to parenting, if I’ve experienced some form of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that perhaps my father or my parents had suffered, I’m going to make sure I break that cycle so that I don’t pass it on, basically,” he said.
“It’s a lot of genetic pain and suffering that gets passed on anyway so we as parents should be doing the most we can to try and say ‘you know what, that happened to me, I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen to you’.”
He added: “It’s hard to do but for me it comes down to awareness.
“I never saw it, I never knew about it, and then suddenly I started to piece it together and go ‘OK, so this is where he went to school, this is what happened, I know this about his life, I also know that is connected to his parents so that means he’s treated me the way he was treated, so how can I change that for my own kids?’
“And here I am, I moved my whole family to the US, that wasn’t the plan but sometimes you’ve got make decisions and put your family first and put your mental health first.”
