Prince Harry receives standing ovation, Calls for equitable distribution of Covid vaccines
As the Duke of Sussex walked on stage at the Global Citizen’s Vax Live concert in Los Angeles on Sunday night (May 2), he was greeted with thunderous cheers and a standing ovation.
During a charity concert in Los Angeles to encourage the fair distribution of coronavirus vaccinations worldwide, the Duke of Sussex made his first public outing following his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh’s, funeral.
Vaccines should be “distributed to everyone everywhere,” Harry pleaded.
At Global Citizen’s Vax Live: The Concert to Reunite the Planet, a fundraising fundraiser in aid of the worldwide vaccine campaign, Prince Harry was joined by a slew of celebrities from the realms of music, television, and politics. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are the event’s campaign chairs.
Prince Harry thanked the world’s frontline medical workers and talked of the value of making vaccines borderless to an animated audience of only fully vaccinated people.

During a speech at the SoFi stadium, Prince Harry urged people to “look beyond ourselves with empathy and compassion.”
Harry addressed the audience with several recognizable faces, including Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez, and H.E.R.
“Tonight is a celebration of each of you here, the vaccinated frontline workers in the audience and the millions of frontline heroes around the world,” Harry said.
“You spent the last year battling courageously and selflessly to protect us all. You served and sacrificed, put yourselves in harm’s way, and acted with bravery, knowing the costs. We owe you an incredible debt of gratitude. Thank you.”
The festival, dubbed “the concert to reunite the world” was held to raise money for Covax, a non-profit organization that works to deliver vaccinations to low- and middle-income nations.
The duke added: “The virus does not respect borders, access cannot be determined by geography. It must be a basic right for all. We must look beyond ourselves with empathy and compassion for those we know and those we don’t. What we do in this moment will stand in history.”
The Duchess of Sussex, who is expecting their second child, was not present.
The Duchess of Sussex is expected to feature on Saturday’s televised coverage of the event, having pre-recorded a message.
The event raised £38.3 million ($53.8 million) for Covax. Among the dignitaries who sent messages of support were US President Joe Biden and Pope Francis.
In a video message, President Biden said that the United States are “working with leaders around the world to share more vaccines and boost production to make sure every country has the vaccines they need.”
Guests such as Ben Affleck, David Letterman, Gayle King, Jimmy Kimmel, and Sean Penn all spoke out about vaccine equity.
“Over the past year, our world has experienced pain, loss, and struggle – together,” Prince Harry and Meghan said in a joint statement ahead of the concert. We must now work together to recover and heal.
“We can’t leave anybody behind. We will all benefit, we will all be safer, when everyone, everywhere has equal access to the vaccine. We must pursue equitable vaccine distribution, and, in that, restore faith in our common humanity. This mission couldn’t be more critical or important.”
On Sunday, May 8, the concert will be shown on US television, and a 90-minute video will be streamed on YouTube on the Global Citizen channel on the same day.
“Global Citizen initially set out to secure enough funding from philanthropists, the private sector and governments, to purchase 10m vaccine doses as part of our campaign,” said Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen. “Through the amazing work of our hosts, campaign chairs, and actions taken by global citizens, I am proud that tonight we have already surpassed our goal, securing enough funding for 10.3m doses.
“And the momentum is only just building. Additional commitments are rolling in and will be announced as part of our global broadcast on 8 May. Critically we need to see the US and the UK step up and start sharing additional doses, and we need pharmaceutical companies such as Moderna to urgently provide millions of doses to Covax to the poorest countries at non-profit prices.”
