How Anna Kendrick And Olivia Wilde Got Drunk While Filming Movie

While most movies use other liquids as alcohol during drinking sequences, Drinking Buddies is an exception. Actual beer was consumed during shooting the independent comedy directed by Joe Swanberg and starring Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick, and Jake Johnson. As a consequence, Wilde often got drunk with Kendrick.

Given that the 2013 film was filmed in a real brewery, the actress claimed that alcohol was never in short supply on DirecTV’s Off Camera with Sam Jones.

“We were hammered the entire movie because it was real beer, because beer on that set was cheaper than water, because we were shooting in a brewery,” Wilde said to People.

The actress also remembered how she failed to inform Anna Kendrick that the beer served on set was real. She said of her co-star: “She sat down to do the first scene and took a huge gulp of beer, not realizing it was real, and was like instantly hammered.”

“She was like, ‘What’s happening? What are you guys doing?’ and we were like, ‘Oh, we forgot to tell you—the beer’s all real and everyone’s drunk. It’s 10am. Welcome to Drinking Buddies.’

Luke (Johnson) and Kate (Wilde), two brewery coworkers, spend way too much time flirting with each other despite the fact that they both have significant others in the movie, which heavily relies on improvised dialogue. About two weeks into the production, Anna Kendrick decided to join the project. Production was set at Chicago’s Revolution Brewery.

Kendrick has also admitted to having issues with drinking on set. “During a scene at the bar, they gave me fake beer, but then during a scene where I’m playing cards with Jake, they gave me real beer, and I didn’t realize it! And so every time I lost, I was pounding beer, and I didn’t realize it was real until halfway through the take,”  Kendrick stated in an interview with Vulture,

She added: “I was like, ‘I’m super drunk right now!’ And so as soon as the take was over, I had to announce to everybody that I was drunk at work. I was horrified by the idea that I was going to be the next troublesome star who got drunk and started flipping over tables or whatever. I just tried to sit quietly until I sobered up.”

Previously, Olivia Wilde defended the entire “drinking at work” in an interview with The Daily Beast, explaining that they were attempting to immerse themselves in the craft beer world and improve their improvisational skills. Swanberg would outline the scenes for the actors and instruct them on the crucial plot points they needed to address. The conversation was largely left to their discretion aside from that.

Ron Livingston and Jake Johnson also starred in the Joe Swanberg-directed film Drinking Buddies.

Drinking Buddies is currently streaming on Netflix for your drinking pleasure.
