Anna Kendrick refused to film “f***ing problematic” romantic scenes

Without Anna Kendrick, Pitch Perfect 3 would probably have ended up being a really tasteless film.

The star claimed last week that she had to reject suggestions “from the top” that the Bellas’ outfits should be “tighter, sexier, and show more skin.”

Then on Tuesday, she said that she refused to do a storyline that was “fucking problematic.”

Kendrick plays Beca in the movie, a vivacious and aspirational college student who wants to work as a music producer. The movie also includes Guy Bernet’s Theo, a music industry executive. Kendrick claims that Beca and Theo were initially intended to start a relationship.

The 32-year-old actress refused to have any romantic relationship with Theo, because she already has an existing professional link with him when he attempts to recruit her as a solo artist

“Originally the music executive was supposed by my romantic interest but I said no to that, because I thought that would be kind of fucking problematic,” Kendrick explained to Harper’s Bazaar UK.

The professional connection and slanted power dynamic between these two characters would undoubtedly make their love relationship suspect, at most, as Theo informs Beca in the second trailer that his label wants to sign her, making him her possible boss or supervisor.

“I was like, ‘Can no one else [see it]? Once I said it, everybody was like, ‘I guess so.'”  The higher-ups were cool with her rejecting the plot, but they tried to sneak in a watered-down love scene, which she also rejected. “And they still wanted to have a version at the end when we kissed, and I still said no,” the actress continued.

After the cappella group reunites for one final time for a singing competition during an international USO tour, Kendrick’s Beca is hailed as the Bellas’ star in the third installment.

She is chosen to open DJ Khaled’s next solo tour by Theo and DJ Khaled, who makes a cameo appearance.

But Kendrick said that she was shocked that Beca would be hailed as the movie’s musical star since her character had long had hopes to become a prominent music producer.

She said, “I was very surprised that they wanted to go that route but I have to admit I had to get talked into it a little bit.”

“It was not what she ever wanted… From the beginning she wanted to be a producer, and so I was surprised that they wanted this artist storyline with her.”

“But obviously we all just worked hard to make it work and make sense.”

In light of recent allegations of s=xual harassment that have engulfed Hollywood, often involving a strong man and his subordinates, Kendrick’s decision to forgo portraying a potentially toxic relationship is much appreciated.

She previously admitted to Harper’s Bazaar that she had to “laugh off” requests for more suggestive outfits. “I’m like, that’s not why people are coming to see the movie,” she stated. “They definitely aren’t showing up because of our sex appeal. It’s nice that audiences are interested in seeing a movie of misfits and girls of different shapes and sizes.”
