Since her marriage to Prince William in 2011, Catherine, Princess of Wales, has held various titles within the British Royal family.

Formerly known as Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, she was bestowed with the title Duchess of Cambridge by the late Queen Elizabeth II on her wedding day.

Additionally, she holds the lesser-known titles of Countess of Strathern and Baroness Carrickfergus.

Following the passing of her grandmother-in-law last year, her title changed once again to Princess of Wales.

However, with the impending coronation of her father-in-law, King Charles III, a new era is set to begin for the United Kingdom.

This raises the question: if Prince William were to ascend to the throne, would Catherine’s title change to Queen?

In February 2022, during the celebrations for Queen Elizabeth’s 70th anniversary on the throne, she provided guidance on how to address a person whose spouse becomes a monarch.

The Queen stated that when her son Charles becomes king, she hopes the public will offer him and his wife Camilla the same support they have given her.

Furthermore, it is her sincere wish that Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her loyal service.

Assuming that Charles follows this tradition and makes a similar announcement for his own son and daughter-in-law, Catherine will also assume the title of Queen Consort of the United Kingdom.

According to the official website of the British Royal Family, a consort’s role is to provide companionship, moral support, and practical assistance to the monarch.

Unlike a king or queen, a consort does not hold a formal position within the government structure.

In 2022, NBC royal commentator Daseem Kandrew explained the distinction in an email, stating that a Queen Consort is a woman who marries a man who becomes king.

On the other hand, a queen is a woman who is born into the role and serves as the head of state, rather than being the wife of a monarch.

Considering these factors, it is likely that if Prince William were to become king, Catherine would assume the title of Queen Consort.

This would align with the traditional practice within the British monarchy.

However, it ultimately depends on the future announcements and decisions made by King Charles III when he ascends to the throne.
