Kate Upton Discusses N*de Photo Leak for the First Time

Despite how famous Kate Upton has become, most of us don’t know much about her. Although hasn’t had a turbulent romance with Legolas, a Bravo show, or a marriage to football royalty, she is a household name. We now know a lot more about the supermodel due to an article in the London Evening Standard, including how the 4Chan n-de picture leak “The Fappening” affected her.

“It was very difficult,” Upton said of the leak. “It’s an invasion of my privacy and it’s not OK. It’s illegal. People don’t have a right to look at those photos or to judge them .” An artist even attempted to exhibit the images in a gallery, but was forced to close due to public outcry and petitions. Upton, who is 22 years old, also stated that she has thought about abandoning Twitter and Instagram, but she is unable to do so.

Given how much of Kate’s celebrity is built on social media, we can see why she felt obligated to remain!

Because of the sensitivity of the images acquired by the hackers, Upton’s privacy breaches were particularly shocking. The collection included naked and graphic images with Detroit Tigers starting Justin Verlander, as well as explicit s-x films (depending on who you believe).

Upton’s experience with the breach is particularly unusual in that her whole ascent to stardom was built on privacy violations in some respects. In 2011, a camera secretly recorded the then-unknown 18-year-old bikini model dancing the Dougie during a Lakers game, giving us our first look of her. Terry Richardson, a notoriously creepy photographer, shot a video of Upton performing the cat daddy in a small bikini and released it to YouTube without her knowledge or approval later that year.

Of course, it was that video that catapulted her to fame, with millions of views. Richardson was allegedly admonished by Upton, who told him it wasn’t OK and that he should have notified her. At the very least, the betrayal of trust appears to have paid off in this case. “It’s obviously fine now,” she remarked later in an interview.

Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Vanessa Hudgens, Jennifer Lawrence, Kaley Cuoco, and a number of other celebrities were affected by “The Fappening.”

The Fappening has been branded an unlawful s-x crime by Jennifer Lawrence and others, and sites like Reddit have since revised their policy on the kind of n-de images that can be published, but no one has been proven guilty.

She had a lot to say, but this sums it up nicely:

“When I have to make that phone call to my dad and tell him what’s happened … I don’t care how much money I get for The Hunger Games,” she said. “I promise you, anybody given the choice of that kind of money or having to make a phone call to tell your dad that something like that has happened, it’s not worth it.”
