Meg Ryan is Writing Her Own Rom-Com
Meg Ryan, the undeniable queen of romantic comedies, is expanding on her distinctive Hollywood brand by creating her own.
Ryan said in an interview with The New York Times that she is now working on a new romantic comedy of her own, which she hopes to direct.
Many of Ryan’s characters were created by Nora Ephron, with whom Ryan had a long professional and personal relationship. Ryan’s choice to try her hand at the genre, the outcome of which is yet unknown, is likely influenced by their collaboration.
“It’s at Working Title Films. I’ll just leave it at that,” she joked before revealing her superstitious side. “Getting the green light, David. My God. You feel like you’re jinxing it if you’re talking about it. Hopefully it’s for me to direct. I’m aware now that romantic comedies are confections, but they have construction. There’s architecture. It’s not something I was aware of back then.”
Though little specifics about the plot of Ryan’s upcoming picture were revealed, she did stress that it would be a “punchy” rom-com, a nod to the late Nora Ephron, who directed several of Ryan’s most beloved films. “[Ephron’s] observation about romantic comedies is that they were commenting on their time in an intelligent way, but with the intention to delight,” Ryan explained. What about a possible cast? That’s also been kept under wraps, though Ryan did name a few current actors she thinks have the charisma to carry a rom-com. “Real charm is probably innate. It’s just there or not. I can see it in people like Jennifer Lawrence or Emma Stone or Ryan Gosling. They probably aren’t able to manage it,” she said.

Ryan mentioned that the indie smash The Big Sick, starring real-life couple Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon, is a recent romantic comedy she appreciated.
“I’m showing my daughter all kinds of romantic comedies. We did a Frank Capra thing over Christmas: It Happened One Night and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.”
Ryan, like Nanjiani and Gordon, can’t think of a finer source of inspiration than her own humorous on-screen and off-screen relationship adventures. After all, she’s the one who added the fake orgasm to the legendary scene in When Harry Met Sally, so who knows what else she’s planning now that she’s in control.
Ryan debuted as a director in 2015, directing the feature film Ithaca. The film, which is clearly not a rom-com, is a World War II-era drama starring Alex Neustaedter, Ryan, her son Jack Quaid, Sam Shepard, and Tom Hanks about a bike telegraph messenger (who flew across the country to drop into the film and reunite with his old rom-com scene partner).
While the fate of her romantic comedy is still up in the air, Ryan revealed further details about a “murder-mystery” comedy she’s working on with Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live.
Ryan clarified, “It’s not really a sitcom. I can’t believe NBC might do it, because it’s so odd. Right now I’d be producing. Maybe I’ll act in it. I don’t know. It’s a limited series, three seasons.”
