A handwritten letter that rapper Tupac Shakur gave to Madonna while serving a prison sentence will soon be auctioned off after a protracted legal fight.

The three-page letter reveals a contrite side of him.

Madonna told journalist Howard Stern in 2015 that they had a covert relationship in the early 1990s.

The letter, which was sent by Shakur in January 1995 at 4:30 am, has an apology-style tone as it expresses Shakur’s desire to reconcile with the pop icon and s=x symbol.

Tupac stated that he was deeply hurt when he overheard the 37-year-old declare that she was tired of hanging around with all the basketball stars and rappers.

He says, “I must apologize to you,” in his letter. “Because like you said I haven’t been the kind of friend I know I am capable of being. Not because I am evil or because you weren’t worthy but at the risk of sounding over dramatic, the effects of racism make it difficult for a young black man to properly show affection for an older white woman.”

The rapper continued by discussing his concerns of dying and advising Madonna to stay cautious. “Please be careful Madonna. Everyone is not as honourable as they seem,” he said. “There are those whose hearts bleed with envy & evil. They would not hesitate to do you harm! Let my five bullets be proof of that!”

Skahur continues by confessing that Madonna’s image as a s=xually liberated woman terrified him. “Please understand my previous position as that of a young man with limited experience with [an] extremely famous sex symbol.”

Later on, 2Pac asks Madonna to pay a visit to him in jail. He signs off the letter with: “It’s funny, but this experience has taught me to not take time 4 [sic] granted.”

The year after, Shakur passed away.

When Madonna requested an urgent court injunction to stop Gotta Have Rock and Roll’s auction in July 2017, bidding on the breakup letter had reached $100,000 (£72,000). It has now officially gone up for auction with that starting bid.

In July 2016, Madonna obtained a temporary halt on the sale of 22 items, stating in court that her notoriety “does not obviate my right to maintain my privacy, including with regard to highly personal item.”

Judge Gerald Lebovits of New York dismissed Madonna’s claim against Lutz. The statue of limitations for recovering her belongings, he claimed, had run out. He also decided that by focusing on Lutz, Madonna had misdirected her legal case.

The Manhattan Supreme Court declared the artifacts to be the auction house’s property, clearing the way for their sale.

Lutz, with whom Madonna had a falling out in 2003 about potential auction goods, has survived breast cancer and will contribute a share of the revenues to breastcancer.org.

Madame X, Madonna’s most recent album, was released last month.
