The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, have filed a lawsuit seeking $1.6 million in damages from two French publications for publishing private photos taken during their 2012 South of France vacation.

The photographs, which were taken using long-lens cameras, show Middleton applying sunscreen on her husband’s body.

The images were first published by La Provence newspaper and were followed by Closer magazine’s release of topless photos of Middleton.

On Tuesday, three photographers and three executives of the publications appeared at a trial near Paris.

During the trial, attorneys for Prince William read a statement to the court stating that the images were particularly “painful” for the couple because of the “harassment” suffered by Princess Diana before her death.
