In the wake of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s explosive Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021, a new book reveals that Kate Middleton played a significant role in shaping Buckingham Palace’s response to the couple’s claims.

During the interview, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex alleged that there were concerns within the royal family about their son Archie’s skin color before his birth.

In response, the palace issued a 61-word statement acknowledging that memories of the conversation may differ.

According to the book “Retainers: The Secret Power Behind the Crown” by Valentine Lowe, Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, was instrumental in pushing for this particular wording.

An excerpt from the book, shared by the Times, quotes a source who claimed that the palace’s initial response had a much softer version of the “memories might vary” sentence.

The source revealed that there was a debate within the palace about how to handle the situation.

Should they extend an olive branch and emphasize the love and acceptance of Harry and Meghan as cherished members of the family?

Or should they intervene and offer a different perspective?

Kate Middleton and Prince William were reportedly united in their desire for a statement that expressed the palace’s disagreement with much of what had been said.

Another source informed the author that it was Kate Middleton who insisted on keeping the controversial line in the palace’s response.

The source emphasized the significance of this decision, stating that history would judge whether this particular expression, or one similar to it, would be included.

By leaving it in, the palace effectively acknowledged the truthfulness of what Harry and Meghan had said.

The source further praised Kate Middleton for her understated role in the matter, noting that she often goes unrecognized for her contributions.

She is always focused on the bigger picture and her future as a queen.

The book also raises questions about who exactly was responsible for the wording of the statement.

Some credit Jean Christophe Demme, Prince William’s confidential secretary, while others attribute it to Sir Clive Alderton.

Additionally, the book claims that Queen Elizabeth did not immediately respond to the interview, choosing instead to watch it on ITV the following evening.

It has been over a year since Meghan spoke out about feeling silenced by the institution during the Oprah interview.

She also revealed that she was denied help when she was in the midst of a mental health crisis.

At the time, the royal family released a statement expressing their sadness at learning about the difficulties Harry and Meghan had faced in recent years.

They acknowledged the seriousness of the issues raised, particularly those related to race.

While they acknowledged that memories might differ, they assured the public that the matters would be addressed privately within the family.

Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be beloved members of the royal family.

Oprah Winfrey later confirmed on CBS Today that it was neither Queen Elizabeth nor Prince Philip who made the comment about Archie’s skin color.

She expressed her frustration at not receiving a clear answer during the interview and off-camera.

The new edition of “Retainers: The Secret Power Behind the Crown” by Valentine Lowe sheds light on Kate Middleton’s role in advocating for the inclusion of the “memories might vary” line in Buckingham Palace’s response to the Oprah interview.
