An engagement ring with a sapphire surrounded by diamonds holds a special place in the world of jewelry.

Once worn by Princess Diana, it now graces the finger of the Princess of Wales, Kate.

However, it could have easily ended up with Meghan Markle.

Before delving into the intricacies of inheriting Diana’s ring, let’s take a moment to revisit its history.

In February 1981, Charles, eager to impress his young bride-to-be, invited jewelers from the renowned Garraud House to Windsor Castle.

They brought their finest selection of engagement rings.

Among the exquisite choices, Diana was captivated by an 18-carat gold ring adorned with 14 diamonds encircling a large oval-shaped Ceylon sapphire.

The color blue held a special significance for her, and sapphire was her favorite gemstone.

However, what was meant to symbolize a fabulous life soon became a reminder of an unhappy marriage.

According to Prince Charles’ former private secretary’s memoirs, Diana once flung the engagement ring at her husband during an argument.

Interestingly, this incident occurred in the same year but during the fall.

Despite their official divorce on August 28, 1996, Diana continued to wear the sapphire ring.

It represented hope for her.

The last public sighting of Lady Diana wearing the ring was on September 5th at Eton College, where her son studied.

As per the divorce agreement, she later handed over the engagement ring to the Royal House.

Following Diana’s tragic death, her sons were allowed to choose something from her jewelry collection as a keepsake.

William opted for a gold Cartier watch, while the 12-year-old Harry decided to keep the ring.

According to Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, the ring held sentimental value for the younger prince.

Harry remembered how he used to hold his mother’s hand, and the sapphire felt so large that it left an impression on his palm.

However, when it became clear that William would be getting married first, Harry selflessly gave the ring to him.

It was a poignant display of brotherly love, allowing the future king to feel his mother’s presence during one of the most significant moments of his life.

Since then, the exquisite sapphire ring has graced Kate’s finger, captivating the hearts of millions of girls worldwide who long to possess a replica of it.

In fact, the demand in the UK was so overwhelming that at the beginning of 2016, Kensington Palace imposed a ban on the production of replicas.

As for Harry, he personally designed Meghan’s wedding ring, incorporating two stones from his late mother’s collection.
