Princess Charlotte Makes History as First Female Royal to Retain Succession Rank

Princess Charlotte, daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, has made history by becoming the first female royal to retain her place in the line of succession despite the birth of a younger brother.

The change in succession law, which was approved unanimously at the Commonwealth Summit in 2011, ensures that girls will not be overtaken by any future younger brothers.

This means that Charlotte remains fourth in line to the throne, while her younger brother, Prince Louis, is fifth.

The UK succession laws were updated prior to the birth of Prince George in 2013, allowing a possible firstborn daughter of Prince William and Kate to take precedence over any younger brothers.

This significant decision marked a departure from a 300-year-old rule that stated only sons could inherit the throne, with titles passing to daughters only in the absence of sons.

However, it’s important to note that the updated law only applies to those born after October 28, 2011.

As a result, Princess Anne and Lady Louise Windsor, who were born before this date, did not benefit from the change.

Princess Anne, who recently celebrated her 72nd birthday, is currently 16th in line to the throne, far behind her younger brothers, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

Lady Louise Windsor, the only daughter of Prince Edward, was also affected by the old succession law.

Born in November 2003, she was overtaken in the line of succession by her younger brother, James Viscount Severn, who was born in December 2007.

If the updated law had been in place in the 1950s, Princess Anne’s children, Peter and Zara, who do not hold HRH titles, would have been closer to the throne than Prince Andrew’s two daughters.

According to expert Marlene Koeing, Princess Charlotte will never be pushed down the royal line of succession due to the gender-equal changes.

However, it’s worth noting that these changes do not apply to Princess Anne.

The news of Princess Charlotte’s historic position in the line of succession has sparked speculation among royal enthusiasts.

Some wonder if she will eventually overtake Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, while others ponder whether there is a chance for a little bit of Diana to make its way into the royal succession.

As we eagerly await the unfolding of events, it remains to be seen how Princess Charlotte’s role in the royal family will evolve.
