Prince William, the future king of England, celebrated his 41st birthday on June 21st, and to mark the occasion, he was given a special birthday honour that is only bestowed upon the most senior members of the royal family.

The bells of Westminster Abbey rang for the first time on his birthday, a former royal tradition that now only rings for the birthdays of the four senior members of the royal family: William and his wife Kate, Princess of Wales, King Charles, and Queen Camilla.

In recent years, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and financial constraints, the royal birthday bells have been silenced.

However, ahead of 2020, they celebrated 12 royal birthdays, including Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, and their four children, Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward, as well as Duchess of Cornwall Camilla, Prince William, Kate, and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

In 2022, the bells will ring four times a year, with the bells last heard for Kate’s 41st birthday on January 9th, and due to ring again on July 17th and November 14th for the birthdays of the Queen and King.

Westminster Abbey tweeted a birthday message for Prince William, wishing him a happy birthday and sharing a two-minute video of the chimes to celebrate the future King’s big day.

The Abbey bell ringers tolled 541 changes of Stedman caters followed by a cycle of London Surprise Royal in celebration.

King Charles also posted a sweet message for his eldest son’s birthday, posting a photo on Twitter of the two taken at his coronation last month.

The photo shows a heartwarming moment between father and son as William appears to help Charles mend his coronation outfit.

The post was captioned, “I wish the Prince of Wales a very happy birthday today,” followed by a balloon emoji.

It’s worth noting that a recent royal precedent on social media revealed that birthday messages will only be posted to working royals, meaning Prince Harry and Meghan Markle won’t receive one when they celebrate their birthdays later this year.

Prince William’s birthday honour is a testament to his growing role in the royal family and his dedication to public service.

As second in line to the throne, he has taken on more responsibilities in recent years, representing the Queen at official events and carrying out charity work.
