Prince Philip decided to retire after the death of his best friend and “gatekeeper” Sir Brian McGrath.

Sir Brian, who died on June 4, 2016, collaborated for 18 years with the Duke of Edinburgh.

Sir Brian’s relationship with the Duke lasted even after he left the role in 1992, and during that period he even served as the Duke’s treasurer and extra equerry.

The fact that both the Queen and the Duke showed up unexpectedly at Sir Brian’s 90th birthday party says a lot.

The death of Sir Brian, who was regarded as the Queen’s “gatekeeper,” was said to have devastated the Queen’s husband, according to the Daily Mail.

Friends say that Prince Philip’s decision to retire was influenced by Sir Brian’s death at the age of 90.

Sir Brian, for one, once claimed that working for Prince Philip was “the best job in the world,” and that joining the Duke’s staff five years later “really saved me” after his wife Elizabeth died in 1977.

Sir Brian had a special place in the Duke’s heart, and his death hurt him greatly.

Unfortunately, the Queen and the Duke have had to say farewell to so many friends over the years since they have aged so long.

“Sir Brian’s death was a blow, but it’s the price of living to such a ripe old age.”
