Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Bid Farewell to Frogmore Cottage

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have officially left Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, marking the end of their time in the UK.

After being given notice to vacate the property six months ago, all of their belongings have now been shipped to California and the keys returned ahead of the deadline.

With no UK base, the couple may have to rely on friends or book hotels for their future visits to the country.

However, it appears that they will be responsible for covering their own expenses, as there is a renewed focus on tightening royal spending.

Back in January, it was revealed that the Sussexes were served with an eviction notice for Frogmore Cottage shortly after the publication of Prince Harry’s memoir, “Spare.”

The Grade II listed cottage, known for its cozy appeal and five bedrooms, is now set to be rented out.

It remains unclear whether Prince Andrew will choose to vacate the nearby 31-room Royal Lodge and move into Frogmore Cottage, as there were initial suggestions that the King had planned this move for his brother.

Following their decision to step back as working senior royals, Prince Harry and Meghan had agreed to reimburse the £2.4 million spent on renovations.

The understanding was that if and when they gave up the use of Frogmore Cottage, the funds for those improvements would be returned to them.

However, when they relocated to the United States, the outstanding charge of £2.4 million remained.

Eventually, the couple paid this amount via a donation to the Sovereign Grant.

Now, the question arises: will they receive a refund for their £2.4 million donation?

Frogmore Cottage was originally presented to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as a wedding gift by Queen Elizabeth II.

However, they only resided there for a brief six-month period.

According to Michael Stevens, it has been confirmed that the couple has now vacated the property.

He also mentioned that the royal family now possesses a significantly enhanced asset.

Prince Harry’s most recent stay at Frogmore Cottage was during his testimony at a phone hacking trial earlier this month.

It is believed that he and Meghan would need to reach a private agreement with the King if they wished to stay in any other royal premises in the future.

Prince Harry repaid the money spent on renovations to taxpayers.

Following the news of their eviction, sources reported that the couple had accepted the decision and maintained an attitude of “it is what it is.”
