King Charles Removes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from Frogmore Cottage

In a surprising turn of events, King Charles has decided to evict Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from their residence at Frogmore Cottage.

This decision may have deeper implications than just a disagreement over property ownership.

Royal experts suggest that the King’s move could be an attempt to prevent Prince Harry from assuming a critical role as Counsellor of State, a position that requires the individual to be domiciled in the UK.

Counsellors of State are appointed to act on behalf of the monarch in case of temporary absence or incapacity.

Typically, this group consists of the sovereign spouse and the next four individuals in the line of succession who are over 21 years old.

The current list includes Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and Princess Beatrice.

However, last year, Princess Anne and Princess Edward were added as official deputies.

The issue at hand is whether Prince Andrew and Prince Harry, who are no longer working members of the royal family and no longer domiciled in the UK, can continue to serve as Counsellors of State.

Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal expert, believes that Prince Harry’s eviction from Frogmore Cottage would result in him losing his domicile in Britain, thus affecting his eligibility for the position.

Dr. Craig Prescott, an expert in UK constitutional law, agrees, stating that Prince Harry’s status as Counsellor of State could be jeopardized if he is no longer domiciled in the UK.

The Royal Family website explains that Counsellors of State are responsible for carrying out official duties on behalf of the sovereign, such as attending Privy Council meetings and receiving new ambassadors to Britain.

Losing his status as Counsellor of State could significantly limit Prince Harry’s ability to serve in a critical capacity for the Royal Family.

Frogmore Cottage was gifted to the Sussexes by the late Queen and has served as their base during visits to the UK.

The property provided them with a sense of security, but reports suggest that they did not leave the premises during their most recent visit in June 2022 for the Platinum Jubilee.

Losing Frogmore Cottage could make the Sussexes feel unsafe and potentially discourage future visits to the UK.

Jack Royston, Newsweek’s Chief Royal Correspondent, emphasizes that Frogmore Cottage holds more significance for the couple than just being a place to stay.

The loss of their UK residence could have far-reaching implications for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

It remains unclear whether King Charles’ decision was a deliberate effort to hinder Prince Harry’s role within the Royal Family.

Nevertheless, this move highlights the challenges the Sussexes face as they navigate their roles outside of the UK while maintaining connections to the Royal Family.
