In a surprising move, Britain’s King Charles III is set to break tradition by entrusting his daughter-in-law, Catherine, Princess of Wales, with an unprecedented role.

According to reports from a leading newspaper, the monarch intends to broaden the number of relatives who can stand in for him during times of illness or when he travels abroad.

It is believed that Princess Catherine will be included in this list, alongside Princess Anne and Prince Edward, as an advisor to the state.

This marks only the second time in history that the list has extended beyond five state councillors.

Currently, the state councillors consist of Queen Consort Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and his eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice.

The Regency Act of 1937 outlines that only the monarch’s consort and the next four heirs to the throne, aged over 21, may serve in this capacity.

However, King Charles III’s decision to expand the list is driven by practical reasons, as explained by monarchy expert Dr. Craig Prescott from Bangor University.

Dr. Prescott highlights that the monarchy is facing a shortage of working family members, and including Princess Catherine as a state councillor is a pragmatic solution.

By doing so, King Charles III aims to address the current challenges faced by the monarchy.

It is expected that this process will be finalized before the king’s first overseas trip early next year.
