King Charles and Camilla’s Staff Salaries Cause Uproar at Palace
The salaries of two senior servants working for King Charles and Queen Camilla have caused controversy after being revealed in the annual Sovereign Grant Report.
The report, released last month, unveiled a significant pay gap between male and female private secretaries, sparking a royal row.
According to the report, King Charles’ private secretary, Sir Clive Alderton, earns between £205,000 and £210,000, which is more than double the salary of Queen Camilla’s top aide, Sophie Densham, who earns between £90,000 and £95,000.
These figures have raised eyebrows and led to questions regarding gender equality within the palace.
The Sovereign Grant Report discloses taxpayer-funded expenditures used to support the monarch’s official duties.

In addition to his salary, it was revealed that Sir Alderton has been provided with accommodation to enhance his performance in his role.
The rent for this accommodation is deducted from his salary at a rate agreed upon with the UK Treasury.
Another interesting revelation in the report is that Prince William received a salary of £5.9 million from the Duchy of Cornwall during the 2022-23 financial year.
The Duchy recorded record profits of over £24 million, an increase of approximately 4.5% compared to the previous year.
However, due to William assuming the role of heir apparent midway through the year, the calculation of his entitlement became more complex.
The report also highlighted the issue of diversity within the palace’s workforce.
For the second consecutive year, the percentage of employees from ethnic minority backgrounds remained at 9.7%, falling short of the target of 10% set for the end of 2022.
However, the palace stated that over 12% of senior or non-executive household roles were held by individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds, including committee directors.
The King’s household aims to increase this figure to 14% by 2025.
The pay gap between the staff of King Charles and Queen Camilla has drawn criticism from a former senior courtier.
They expressed surprise at the significant difference in salaries, particularly highlighting Sophie Densham’s lower pay as a disappointment.
The courtier described Densham as a dedicated and caring individual, emphasizing the importance of her royal role.
Reports indicate that Lady Densham is constantly by Camilla’s side during official engagements, while Sir Alderton only accompanies the King on the most important occasions.
A royal source, familiar with both employees, raised concerns about the pay disparity, suggesting that it may be based on gender rather than seniority.
They praised Sophie’s capabilities and dedication as a valuable support to the Queen.
Furthermore, it was disclosed that Sir Alderton also benefits from provided accommodation to aid his performance in his role.
Currently residing in Marlborough House, a short walk from his Buckingham Palace office and neighboring Clarence House, the 56-year-old has been working for King Charles since 2006.
The revelation of the salaries of King Charles and Camilla’s top staff has sparked a heated debate within the palace.
As discussions continue, questions regarding gender equality and fair remuneration for employees remain at the forefront.
The palace is under pressure to address these concerns and ensure a more equitable working environment for its staff.
