Kate Hits Back at Meghan and Harry’s Oprah Claims with Support from Queen and Senior Royals
New details have emerged regarding the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding Kate Middleton’s response to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s discrimination allegations.
In his book, Courtiers, royal correspondent Valentine Lowe sheds light on the tough stance taken by Kate and her husband, Prince William, in formulating the palace’s robust reply to the Sussexes’ incendiary interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Serious negotiations were initiated to craft an official response to the allegations.
William and Kate, seated together on a sofa, engaged in discussions with their advisors on how best to handle the situation.
At that point, the draft statement did not include the now-famous phrase, “some recollections may vary.”

According to an insider, the initial version was much milder.
The question arose: should they rise above it all and extend an olive branch to Harry and Meghan as beloved family members, or should they intervene and offer their own perspective?
While William and Kate were cautious about engaging in a back-and-forth with the Sussexes, they were clear about their position.
They wanted a stronger statement.
They believed it was crucial to convey that the institution did not accept many of the claims made.
The insider revealed, “It’s really important that you guys come up with the right way of making sure that we’re saying that this does not stand.”
Kate fully supported William’s stance.
Although some have attributed the inclusion of the phrase “some recollections may vary” to Alderton, it is said that John Christophe Gray, William’s new private secretary, who had been in the role for less than three weeks, was responsible.
Despite opposition from senior officials in other households, who feared provoking Harry and Meghan, Kate insisted that the phrase remain.
She argued that history would judge the statement, and without this phrase or something similar, everything the Sussexes had said would be accepted as true.
This episode highlights Kate’s often underestimated strength.

The revised draft was sent to Buckingham Palace for approval and returned a couple of hours later with the queen’s endorsement.

However, royal expert Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine and a biographer, believes that Harry is mistaken if he expects a close friendship to develop between his wife and Kate.
Seward stated that Kate would be upset and angry with Harry for discussing her in public.
She explained that, traditionally, one should never wear the same color as the queen or any senior member of the family during group events.
