Prince Harry Stripped of Counsellor of State Role as Throgmore Cottage Deadline Passes

Prince Harry is facing yet another blow as he loses his role as a counsellor of state, following the deadline for him and his wife Meghan to vacate Throgmore Cottage.

The couple, who recently relocated to Montecito, California, have officially been evicted from their UK residence, making it impossible for Harry to continue in his role.

This comes as a significant development, as being a counsellor of state grants one the authority to carry out official duties on behalf of the sovereign, including signing documents.

Throgmore Cottage, a historic Grade II listed home, had served as the Sussexes’ base in the UK since their wedding in 2018.

However, today marked the final day for the couple to leave the Windsor property, with their remaining possessions being shipped to their new home in California.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliam explained the implications of this move, stating that losing their UK residence without a replacement is a major issue for Harry.

It means he can no longer fulfill his role as a counsellor of state, a position that would have allowed him to act on behalf of the king in the event of his incapacitation.

Currently, the counsellors of state include the Queen Consort, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Sussex, the Duke of York, and Princess Beatrice.

Last year, Prince Charles proposed adding Princess Anne and Prince Edward to the list, ensuring the smooth functioning of public business during his absence on official overseas duties.

However, with Harry and Meghan no longer having Frogmore Cottage, any future stays at royal residences will require a private agreement with the king.

The loss of their UK home also raises questions about the couple’s arrangements during future visits to the country.

As they no longer have a residence in the UK, they are expected to rely on the hospitality of family, friends, or hotels.

This marks a significant shift for Harry, who most recently stayed at Frogmore Cottage during a three-day visit for a court case.

Confirming their departure from Frogmore Cottage, courtier Sir Michael Stevens stated that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have vacated the property.

He also highlighted the recent renovations carried out on the cottage, emphasizing its enhanced value as an asset for the crown.

As Prince Harry continues to navigate his new life outside the royal fold, the loss of his counsellor of state role further underscores the challenges he and Meghan face in establishing their independence.

With their focus now firmly on their ventures in the United States, the couple will undoubtedly be exploring new avenues to make their mark on the world stage.
