“I wanted out” – Prince Harry Struggled to find a role for himself in the Monarchy
Harry says, “I wanted out.” In an astonishingly frank interview, he discusses how he contemplated leaving his Royal job for a “normal life,” but decided to continue for the Queen.
Prince Harry has revealed that he once ‘wanted out’ of the Royal Family and abandoning the wealth he was born into in order to pursue a ‘ordinary life.’
The 32-year-old Prince opens up about his turbulent 20s in an incredibly blunt interview, saying that since quitting the Army, he “didn’t want to grow up” and struggled to find a suitable position for himself.
The Prince offered an astonishing glimpse into how he once felt directionless and found an outlet from the pomp and pageantry surrounding him when speaking to journalist Angela Levin.
He admitted, ‘I spent many years kicking my heels and I didn’t want to grow up.’

Following many years of gambling, drinking, and heavy smoking, which he previously characterized as “total chaos,” Harry confessed to being “really close” to a breakdown on many occasions.
When he finally decided to be more constructive, he also doubted whether staying a junior Royal would enable him to effectively utilize his skills – and therefore contemplated life as a commoner.
‘I thought I wanted out, but then chose to continue and figure out a place for myself,’ he said, making it plain that his allegiance to the Queen was the guiding force behind his decision.
Harry told the Mail on Sunday that after quitting the army, he felt confused. He admitted wasting several years kicking his heels and refusing to grow up. Regardless of his dissatisfaction, he wanted to continue and “figure out a position for myself.”
He has since been active in charitable work for disabled soldiers and mental health organizations as a result of his involvement. Most prominently, he and his brother and sister-in-law initiated the Heads Together movement.
“We are very enthusiastic about our organizations, and they were selected because they follow in our mother’s footsteps,” he said. “I appreciate charitable work and meeting new people.”
“The best escape I’ve ever had,” the Prince, who is fifth in line to the throne, said of his ten years in the army.
Harry worked in Afghanistan twice, but was compelled to quit in 2007 after the press exposed his involvement, placing him in risk.
He admitted, “I feel really resentful [about this].” “I’ve never had a greater escape than being in the Army. I felt like I was finally accomplishing something. I felt like I was part of a squad and had a profound knowledge of people from diverse backgrounds.”
Prince Harry has been more transparent with his views as a prince, recently claiming that no member of the Royal Family will voluntarily take on the role of king.
