The Crown tops Emmy nominations with 24 nods
With 24 nominations each, “The Crown” and “The Mandalorian” matched for the most Emmy nods on Tuesday, but “WandaVision,” the runner-up, gave the Marvel universe bragging rights.
With the top-nominated scripted programs on platforms that mainly emerged in the last two years, the nominations confirmed the fast growth of streaming. Only the NBC program “This Is Us” received a nomination in the top three categories – drama, comedy, and limited series.
During an oppressive epidemic in which housebound Americans depended more than ever on television for entertainment, TV academy voters acknowledged a broad collection of performers and producers and a diversified blend of stories.
Mj Rodriguez of Pose, for example, is the first trans woman to be nominated for a main acting award.
“The moment my name was announced, I just screamed and I broke,” Rodriguez said. “My mom grabbed me. She kind of flung me around. … I remember falling into my boyfriend’s arms and just crying tears of joy, tears of happiness. I felt so seen.”

“The Crown,” Netflix’s fourth best series nomination, is arguably the streaming service’s greatest chance to win its first-ever top series award. Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin’s portrayals of Prince Charles and Diana Spencer’s romance and difficult marriage brought the British royal drama closer to current events.
Before the first nominees were revealed, TV academy chief executive Frank Scherma stated, “These nominations represent the work done in television through the most challenging year I can think of.” While many of us in our medium worked remotely throughout the last 18 months, I have to say it feels so good to be getting back on a set. Making great television is a collaborative group effort where the sum equals more than the parts, and I can’t tell you how much I’ve missed it.”
O’Connor and Corrin were nominated for lead drama acting, as was Olivia Colman for her depiction of Queen Elizabeth II, with Gillian Anderson receiving a supporting nomination for her portrayal of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Nearly 44% (42 nominations) of the 96 acting nominations for drama, comedy, and miniseries went to persons of color. There were 34 nominations for Black actors, one less than previous year.
The Mandalorian, a Star Wars spinoff, and WandaVison, a Marvel spinoff starring Wanda and Vision, have joined the ranks of previous sci-fi and fantasy Emmy winners Game of Thrones and Lost.
Oprah Winfrey was nominated for best hosted nonfiction series or special for her conversation with Harry – Charles and Diana’s son — and his wife Meghan.
Amazon’s comedy-tinged take on superheroes, “The Boys,” received a nomination for best drama.
The nominations were revealed by Scherma and father-daughter actors Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us) and Jasmine Cephas Jones (Blindspotting).
The event, which was held virtually last year due to the COVID-19 epidemic, will be broadcast live on CBS from a theater with a small in-person audience of nominees and guests. The host is Cedric the Entertainer.
