Princess Kate Asserts Her Influence in Crafting Royal Response to Sussex Interview
In a recent revelation, author Valentine Lowe suggests that the phrase “some recollections may vary” in the statement issued by Prince William and Kate Middleton regarding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s complaints about the monarchy was pushed by Princess Kate herself.
Lowe, a royal correspondent for The Times, shares this insight in an updated paperback version of his book “Courtiers.”
According to Lowe, the immortal phrase, which implies that not all recollections align, originated from William and Kate’s office and was proposed by their private secretary, Jean Christophe Gray.
However, it was Kate who insisted on toughening up the initial draft statement, ultimately shaping the more robust response sent to the Queen.
Lowe further emphasizes that this incident exemplifies Kate’s often underestimated assertiveness.

He writes, “Kate does not receive as much credit as she deserves because she is so subtle about it.
She is playing the long game, always keeping her eye on her future role as Queen.”
This revelation sheds light on Kate’s strategic approach and her determination to shape her own historic path.
The statement, consisting of four sentences, expressed the family’s sadness over the challenges faced by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in recent years.
It specifically addressed concerns raised about racism while acknowledging that different recollections may exist.
The family assured that these concerns would be taken seriously and addressed privately.
The statement concluded by affirming that Harry, Meghan, and their son Archie will always be cherished members of the family.
While the televised interview aired in the US on March 7, 2021, it was not broadcast in the UK until the following day.
Despite having a draft of the statement prepared, the palace initially remained silent.
This delay was due to the late Queen’s wish to watch the program alongside the rest of the population before responding.
The influence exerted by Princess Kate in shaping the response to the Sussex interview highlights her growing role within the royal family.
