Prince William’s Unfortunate Gift to Kate Middleton Almost Ended Their Relationship
It is not often that we get a glimpse into the personal lives of the royal family, but sometimes they themselves reveal interesting details.
During an appearance on a podcast hosted by renowned football player Peter Crouch, Prince William shared a candid story about a gift-giving mishap early on in his relationship with Kate Middleton.
It was Kate’s birthday, their first one celebrated together, and William found himself struggling to come up with the perfect present.
After considering various options, he made a rather unexpected and unfortunate choice – binoculars.
The prince admits that he has no idea why he thought this would be a suitable gift, but at the time, it seemed like a good idea.

However, Kate did not appreciate the gesture as expected.
She interpreted the gift as a mockery, thinking that William was making fun of her because she had never shown any interest in birdwatching or peeping into other people’s windows.
This misstep almost became the end of their relationship, and William believes that even to this day, Kate has not fully forgiven him for it.
Fortunately, Kate eventually let go of her resentment towards the binoculars, and the couple now has three children together.
Nevertheless, on subsequent birthdays, she has playfully reminded William of his ill-fated gift, teasing him about his lack of gift-giving skills.
Prince William learned his lesson from this experience and has since made sure to shower his beloved wife with extravagant jewelry.
In 2005, he presented Kate with a rose gold ring adorned with pearls and garnet.
This gift holds symbolic meaning as pearls represent the prince’s family stone, while garnet represents the Middleton family stone.
For their engagement, Kate received Princess Diana’s iconic 18-carat sapphire ring, surrounded by 14 diamonds.
Following their wedding, William gifted her earrings featuring sapphires and diamonds that once belonged to Lady Diana.
On Christmas 2011, he surprised her with earrings embellished with green amethyst and diamonds.
And for their third wedding anniversary, Kate received a white gold Cartier watch with sapphires on the dial.
Reflecting on Prince William’s unfortunate gift choice, it begs the question: what is the most unfortunate gift you have ever received?
