On May 6th, Prince Charles will be crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey, and his son Prince William will play a key role in the historic ceremony.

The 40-year-old Prince will kneel before his father and pledge his loyalty and allegiance to him as his “liege man of life and limb.”

This momentous act of fealty, called the homage of royal blood, echoes the vow made by Prince Philip to Queen Elizabeth in 1953.

The liturgy of the coronation service, released by the Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace, confirms Prince William’s role in the ceremony.

He is the only royal who will pay his respects in this way, and he will also appear during the service as the stole royal, assisting in putting the robe on King Charles.

Another significant departure from tradition is the invitation for people around the UK watching or listening to the ceremony to join in a homage of the people.

The Archbishop, the Most Revelation and Rite Honourable Justin Welby, will lead the people in acclaiming “God save the King,” with the response being “God save King Charles, long live King Charles, may the King live forever.”

The leaders of other faiths will also greet Charles in unison as he leaves the service, acknowledging the value of public service and uniting with people of all faiths and beliefs in thanksgiving and service for the common good.

The service will have other firsts, including a female bishop taking part in a coronation, and the traditional languages of the nations of the British Isles will also be used.

There is a prayer in Welsh and a hymn, Veney Creator, which will be sung in Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Irish Gaelic.

In a poignant moment in the service, King Charles will recite a personal prayer, possibly the first time it has been voiced so publicly by the Sovereign.

Charles will say, “Grant that I may be a blessing to all thy children, of every faith and conviction, that together we may discover the ways of gentleness and be led into the path of peace.”

Prince George, Prince William’s eldest son and second in line to the throne, will also play a special role in his grandfather’s coronation.

The nine-year-old royal will serve as a page of honour to King Charles at the crowning ceremony, making history as the youngest future king to play an official role at a coronation.

This historic ceremony marks a significant moment in the tradition of the coronation, with the general public offered an opportunity to join national figures in declaring their allegiance to the Sovereign.

As Prince William pays homage to his father, the nation will come together to celebrate the ascension of King Charles to the throne and look forward to a new era in the history of the British monarchy.
