Yesterday, Prince William embarked on a two-day tour of the United Kingdom to unveil his ambitious five-year effort called Homewards, aimed at eliminating homelessness throughout the country.

As part of this tour, the Prince has now arrived in Belfast, where he plans to showcase his significant new initiative.

During his visit, it was revealed that Prince William drew inspiration from his late grandfather’s approach to getting things done.

The Duke of Edinburgh had once convinced politicians and civil servants to finance a building in Belfast by posing a direct question: “Why don’t we just give them the funds they need?”

This approach left a lasting impression on the Prince, who is determined to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps.

The 41-year-old Prince visited the East Belfast Mission, located at the Scania Centre on New Townards Road.

The Reverend Brian Anderson, chairman of the building’s board, gave him a guided tour of the facility.

Interestingly, back in 2008, when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited the Old East Belfast Mission Hall, they were shown designs for the Scania Centre.

The Queen had inquired about the delay in its completion, and a predecessor of the Reverend had explained the lack of funding as the reason.

This story was shared with Prince William, who found it resonated with his own experiences.

As the Prince mingled with well-wishers outside the mission, he expressed delight at hearing stories about his grandfather.

He remarked, “That sounds just like my grandfather,” further emphasizing the influence his late grandfather had on him.

During his time in Belfast, Prince William also visited the East Belfast Mission, where he was warmly welcomed by Dame Fiannuala Mary J.O.

Boyle, Belfast’s Lord Lieutenant.

He announced that Belfast would be the fourth pilot location for his Home Ward’s housing program.

The Prince’s arrival at the Scanus Center in East Belfast was met with applause and cheers from supporters.

The mission plays a crucial role in offering support to homeless individuals, including providing a hostel and temporary accommodation.

Prince William has chosen six locations as five-year pilot projects to demonstrate how homelessness can be effectively addressed.

Northern Ireland, as a whole, has been designated as one of these areas.

The aim is to make homelessness rare, brief, and unrepeated.

At the Scanus Center, the Prince learned about the challenges faced by Belfast, including a scarcity of social housing and skyrocketing rents in the private sector due to an overheated market.

The future King of England met with professionals working on the ground, commending them for their efforts and promising that Homewards would change the narrative and lead the United Kingdom toward eliminating homelessness.

He described the initiative as a “rocket boost” to the fantastic work already being done.

Following his visit to Belfast, Prince William traveled to Aberdeen, where he confirmed that it would be the fifth area selected for the initiative’s homes.

In Aberdeen, the Home Wards facility will have access to additional resources and connections, showcasing the power of coordinated efforts in combating homelessness.

Together with Home Wards advocate David Duke-MB, founder and CDO of Street Soccer Scotland and Street Soccer London, the Prince visited the Tilledrone Community Campus.

Here, they demonstrated the value of collaboration among various community service providers in the fight against homelessness.

During the tour of the campus, Prince William observed various activities already taking place, including cooking classes, NHS services, housing assistance, and nursery sessions for young children.

The Prince had the opportunity to meet Danny Jack, an 18-year-old who had been sleeping on the streets for two months.

Reflecting on their meeting, Prince William described it as a challenging yet life-changing and educational experience.

He emphasized the need for more discussions surrounding homelessness, particularly among young people, who often face shame and significant obstacles in their lives.

Prince William’s busy day also included visits to London, Bournemouth, and Newport, Wales, where he explored programs aimed at aiding the homeless and preventing individuals from living on the streets.

In Newport, he had the opportunity to meet with homeless people who have benefitted from these programs.

Prince William’s Homewards initiative is set to make a significant impact on combating homelessness in the United Kingdom.

With his dedication and determination, he aims to create a society where homelessness becomes rare, brief, and ultimately a thing of the past.
