Prince Harry and Meghan’s Children Receive New Titles Under Royal Traditions

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s children, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, have been bestowed with new titles in accordance with long-standing royal family traditions.

With the ascension of King Charles, both Archie and Lilibet now hold the titles of His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness respectively, due to changes in the line of succession.

The titles granted to Archie and Lilibet follow a tradition initiated by George V, which grants titles to the grandchildren of the reigning monarch.

However, it is important to note that any sitting monarch has the authority to modify the rules established by their predecessor.

In this case, King Charles III has not made any mention of altering the guidelines regarding title bestowal for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their children.

During his first address to the nation, King Charles III expressed his affection for Prince Harry and Meghan, stating, “I want to also express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”

Although Archie and Lilibet have not yet been granted the titles of Prince and Princess, an update regarding their titles is anticipated.

As the line of succession shifts following the passing of Queen Elizabeth, all members of the royal family are expected to move up one position.

This means that Prince Harry and Meghan’s children will eventually receive the titles of Prince and Princess.

Notably, the royal website has already been updated to reflect the new titles of other senior royals, such as Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince William now holds the title of Prince of Wales, while Kate is recognized as Princess of Wales, making her the first to bear this title since Princess Diana.

However, despite their grandfather’s ascent to the throne, Archie and Lilibet are still referred to as “master” and “miss” on the royal website.

The palace spokesperson stated that the titles will be updated on the website as soon as they receive the necessary information.

It remains uncertain whether Prince Harry and Meghan themselves, or Buckingham Palace, will confirm if their children will use the titles.

The spokesperson for the King clarified that while the website has been updated for Prince William and Kate, expressing love through a website update is not as straightforward.

He assured that the website will be updated accordingly once they have the relevant information.

When asked about whether Archie and Lilibet would adopt the titles of Prince and Princess, the spokesperson emphasized that their focus is currently on the next 10 days, and any updates regarding the titles will be made when information becomes available.

In 2021, there were suggestions that Charles intended to limit the number of prominent royals and prevent Archie from becoming a prince once he assumes the throne.

However, the recent developments indicate that the official decision regarding Archie and Lilibet’s titles is yet to be confirmed.

As the royal family navigates these changes, it is evident that the titles hold significant importance and are subject to both tradition and the decisions of the reigning monarch.
