When the trailer for “This Is Us,” “a dramedy version of Lost,” went viral, Milo Ventimiglia’s bare behind was its unexpected star.

In the new NBC series, the former Heroes actor plays the lead opposite Mandy Moore, who portrays his very pregnant wife, and fans of the teaser got to see him in his natural state. The rear exposure startled Ventimiglia a little.

“I got to set on day one of filming, walked into my trailer, and I saw varying sizes of nud* cloth and tape. And I’ve done [nud* scenes] enough times to know exactly strategically how to place my manhood, so as to be respectful of the crew and my co-star,”  he said to Vulture on Thursday night at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual Grants Banquet at the Beverly Wilshire hotel. “But then it was like, eh, this is NBC, they can’t show this stuff on TV, it’s no big deal. They’re gonna cut and get a side of my hip, or anything like that. But no, when I saw the trailer I’m like, ‘Wow, man, that is my *ss and that is my *ss before my face. Okay, here we go.’”

Not that anybody is complaining, especially not his co-star.

Moore admitted to Vulture that “I know full well that we’ve all been upstaged by the derriere. And I’m totally fine with it. It’s a really good b*tt. And I got to look at it for almost a whole day.”

Ventimiglia and Moore, who portrays his on-screen wife, had a memorable first meeting on the day of the shoot.

“I’m like, ‘Hi, I know we barely know each other but can I see your n-k-d b*tt? Cool, great, thanks, bye,’” said Moore. “He seemed so comfortable. Like, I don’t know if this is true, but he seems like the kind of guy that would totally be fine to walk around in the nude … I guess if you work that hard for a body like that, I would probably walk around n-k-d all the time, too.”

Evidently, Ventimiglia agreed with it as well. He joked with TODAY last week “It’s the first time in my career, 21 years, that my *ss has preceded my face. It’s a hardworking *ss, I guess.”

Moore said, “He was so comfortable. In the first scene, he has like a little towel, he’s meant to be n-k-d, and in-between takes he wasn’t like grabbing a robe, he was just like trying to chill out.”

Moore maintained a professional air. “I was OK. Averting my eyes, just to be respectful,” She said. However, something has to stop at some time.

She said, “He has a nice tush. But there’s only so much tush you want to look at.”

Recently, Milo explained to Glamour how he was cast in This Is Us.

He stated: “I got the script last October and loved it. It was just something that was so beautiful and so rare to find that it would have stood out in a pile of thousands, of millions. I had a connection with Dan Fogelman (the creator) because he was friends with a friend I produced with, so, for me, I couldn’t wait to meet [Dan] and team behind the show. We got along instantly, and that was my path to landing the job.”

And when Mandy was asked whether the co-stars went through the chemistry test before landing the part, she responded: “I read the pilot and loved it. I knew Dan from Tangled, and I really wanted to be a part of this. I think I was the first group or wave that auditioned for [this role] because I auditioned and then I didn’t hear anything for a month. They said, “They really like you, but they are going to New York and reading a bunch of girls out there.” I was like, “OK,” because, I mean, what are you going to do? We audition, and that’s our job. You just let it go. Then, they later called me in to do a chemistry read, and they had three guys and three girls. I remember hearing that the producers really liked Milo and wanted him to be the guy. He was the guy to beat! So when I went in to read, he was the only guy I went in and read with. You had to read with the other girls.”

Fans of Ventimiglia have seen her behind on other occasions outside the This Is Us trailer; for example, in 2012’s That’s My Boy. Ventimiglia told Vulture, “The funny thing is, if this is the first time you’re seeing my ass, I think you’re a little behind. No pun intended.”

The next Netflix run of the show will also include Ventimiglia, who is perhaps best known to some as Jess, the ultimate bad guy and Rory’s love interest in Gilmore Girls. Can we anticipate seeing his backside in Stars Hollow as well? No, he answered. “But I probably make an *ss of myself in Gilmore Girls so it’s a different kind of a thing. My *ss is on my face.”

NBC will debut This Is Us on September 20.
