Michael Douglas discusses being ‘a s-x addict’

Michael Douglas has denied persistent rumors that he had treatment for sex addiction in the 1990s, saying the tale was concocted by a “clever” British tabloid editor soon after the release of his sensual picture Basic Instinct.

The Hollywood actor is certain the tale started because he was checked into a rehab facility for alcoholism and had just finished filming a steamy movie, which led to rumors that his treatment was connected to his s=x life.

Despite all of this locker room banter, it is a comfort to read that Michael Douglas is not planning to become a s=x addict and has never been one.

He responds calmly, “Let me explain how that whole “s=x addiction” thing arose.”

‘I had an alcohol issue – I’d just lost my stepfather and it was a good rehab session; it certainly helped me find out a couple of things.

‘Basic Instinct had just come out and I don’t remember who the clever editor was in London, but they came up with “sex addiction”.

‘It became a new disease. No one had heard of that up until then, but it’s stuck with me ever since. And it still pops up now and again.’

He now jokes about it.

‘Oh yeah, my father is actually rather proud of it.’

He says, “Meet my kid, the sex addict”

Regarding the 98-year-old Hollywood legend, Douglas remarks, “Dad’s a pretty amusing person.”

‘He’s witty. He has a new book of poetry out, some that he wrote and some poems that he loves, and the title is Life Could Be Verse.

‘He’s wonderful and he tells me he’s proud of me. He didn’t get a pat on the back from his father, so it’s lovely that he’s able to tell me that.

‘He’s going to make it to his century, I’m sure of that. It will be fantastic.’

Douglas came to the realization that he had behaved in the same way as an absentee parent as his own father Kirk had done when he was a child as a result of his son Cameron’s imprisonment.

In 2010, he said, “I’ve taken blame about being a bad father—if being a bad father is working your butt off trying to create a career at one time.” Douglas said that drinking ran in Cameron’s mother Diandra Luker’s family.

“Then you finally end up with who you choose to hang out with,” Douglas said. “In Cameron’s position, he took a lot of lowlifes and he was a very attractive target to hang out with, and I don’t think that helped, either… I’m willing to take the hit.”
