Margot Robbie Set to Replace Emma Stone in Damien Chazelle’s ‘Babylon’
Oscar winner Emma Stone has left director Damien Chazelle’s next Babylon, with Margot Robbie in talks to take her place.
Robbie would reteam with her Once Upon a Time in Hollywood co-star Brad Pitt, who is committed to the Paramount film, if a deal is reached.
Due to a scheduling difficulty, Stone had to leave “Babylon.”
The film, which is slated to be R-rated, is set in the late 1920s, when Hollywood was transitioning from silent to talkies. The film was acquired by Paramount in late 2019 with the intention of releasing it on Christmas Day 2021 as a possible Oscar candidate. Unfortunately, the coronavirus epidemic threw a wrench in Paramount’s well-laid preparations, making the release date uncertain at best.
Olivia Hamilton, Matt Plouffe, Marc Platt, and Tobey Maguire will produce “Babylon.” The California Film Commission awarded the movie a $17.5 million tax credit allocation in November 2019 for filming the period drama in California. The commission predicted that “Babylon” would generate $83.4 million in “qualified spending” — defined as below-the-line wages to California workers and payments to in-state vendors — but the funding was hinged on production starting within 180 days.

Robbie is in negotiations to play Clara Bow, an early sex symbol and box office success in Hollywood.
Robbie was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in “Bombshell” earlier this year. In 2018, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as ice skater Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.”
“Babylon” is Chazelle’s follow-up to his blockbuster “First Man,” in which Ryan Gosling featured as Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.
And Robbie isn’t the only newcomer: _Wu Assassins’ Li Jun Li will play real-life actress Anna May Wong, who is regarded as Hollywood’s first Chinese American movie star, according to Collider.
While no official decision has been made, it is expected that Stone’s next project, Cruella, will debut on Disney+ in 2021. Cruella is a live-action prequel feature film following a young Cruella de Vil. If you can’t get enough of Stone’s talents, she can be heard as the voice of Eep in Dreamworks Animation’s The Croods: A New Age, which is currently in cinemas. In the cartoon sequel, the Croods face up against the Bettermans, a rival family who claims to be better and more evolved than the Croods.
