In a heartfelt tribute, King Charles has commended the Queen’s Piper, Major Paul Burns, for his poignant performance during her state funeral last month.

The King described his appearance as important and deeply moving, acknowledging the significant role he played in honoring Her Majesty.

During the funeral service at London’s Westminster Abbey on September 19, Major Paul Burns performed the traditional lament, “Sleep, dearie, sleep,” while the congregation stood in solemn respect.

The emotional impact of his performance resonated with all those present, including Lieutenant-General Nick Borton, who shared a letter from the monarch expressing her gratitude to the Army for their contributions during the period of mourning.

Addressed to the Chief of the General Staff, the Queen’s letter conveyed her sincere appreciation for the Army’s involvement in the events following the death of her beloved mother, the late Queen.

She expressed her admiration for the flawless execution of the ceremonial proceedings in Scotland and London, overseen by the Garrison Sergeant Majors.

From the opening gun salutes to the processions of the State Funeral, every aspect was carried out with utmost precision.

The Queen further extended her commendation to the Bearer Parties, comprised of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and the Grenadier Guards, who displayed immense dignity and devotion in their service.

She also acknowledged the pivotal role played by the Queen’s Piper, recognizing the importance and deeply moving nature of his contribution.

With over four thousand men and women from the Army involved, some even returning from distant locations such as Iraq, Canada, and Cyprus, the Queen expressed her heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of them.

The letter was signed by the new monarch, Charles R., as a testament to his appreciation and recognition of their efforts.

In addition to the King’s praise, Major Paul Burns has been bestowed with a special new role.

According to The Sun, he has been appointed as the official Piper for the new monarch.

He recently carried out his first official performance at Balmoral, the King’s Residence, Burquill House.

Going forward, Paul will accompany Charles wherever he stays in the UK, ensuring that he plays outside the King’s bedroom window at 9 am every morning, just as he did for the late Queen.

Paul, a member of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, assumed the position of the Queen’s Piper Major in 2021, succeeding Piper Major Richard Grisdale.

For years, he faithfully played the bagpipes underneath the Queen’s window each morning at 9 am, regardless of her location, whether it be Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Holyrood House, or Balmoral.

During the funeral, Paul fulfilled his duties as the seventeenth Piper to Her Majesty, concluding his tenure with a heartbreaking rendition of “Sleep, Dearie, Sleep” at Westminster Abbey.

As the Queen’s coffin was lifted from the catafalque and moved through the Great West Door, the familiar sound that had awakened her every day now accompanied her on her final journey to eternal rest.

The Queen’s fondness for the bagpipes dates back to Queen Victoria’s reign in 1843 when she established the role of a personal piper after discovering that the Marquess of Brethelbane had one.
