When Katee Sackhoff tweeted about gun safety this weekend, she sparked a heated argument on an already-heated issue, and the Battlestar Galactica actress believes it cost her 100,000 Twitter followers.

In response to news that Arizona father Justin Stanfield Thomas was unintentionally murdered by his 4-year-old kid with an unattended pistol over the weekend, Sackhoff tweeted on Monday, “Please practice gun safety. This is horrible!”

Soon after, Sackhoff’s Twitter page was deluged by supporters who advocated for gun regulation rather than gun safety.

One of her followers tweeted, “Here’s a radical idea folks. How about NO gun?” Sackhoff replied, “Never gonna happen in the US. Proper gun safety is a necessity though.”

That answer enraged an increasing number of Twitter users, and by the time the back-and-forth had cooled down, Sackhoff had lost nearly 100,000 followers. And the actress had learnt an important lesson regarding political remarks and social media.

That did not satisfy many, who continued to criticize her initial comment.

“Just to be clear…I NEVER said automatic guns should be legal! My goal is to open a respectful intelligent informed dialogue. This is the problem with guns and people…too much passion on all sides to have a discussion that yields results everyone can be content with,” Sackhoff responded..

“On a lighter note since I’ve lost half my followers due to talking about gun safety … the sun is shining & Happy Monday! Love your neighbor today!,” Sackhoff tweeted later in the day.

Some of her fans rallied around her, with one writing, “you’ve lost the crazy people. The logical people stick around and understand what you’re saying.”

Her final tweet on the subject was polite, but she remained committed to her safety-first philosophy.

“Well I guess I just learned talking about #GunSafety inspires a massive debate. Pro-Gun or Anti-Gun SAFETY should be unanimous! #OneLove,” Sackhoff also tweeted.
