Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have officially cleared their Frogmore Cottage home after being asked to surrender the property on the Windsor Palace estate.

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace confirmed this on Wednesday during a briefing for journalists covering the release of the annual Sovereign Grant report.

According to the spokesperson, the couple has removed all their belongings from the property and has also paid for the expenses incurred by the Sovereign Grant, including the renovation of Frogmore Cottage.

This move leaves the Crown with a significantly improved asset.

In 2019, Queen Elizabeth II granted Harry and Meghan the use of Frogmore Cottage when they were expecting their first child.

The property, originally staff accommodation, required extensive renovation before it could be made livable.

When the couple announced their intention to step back from their royal duties in 2020, they expressed their desire to retain the use of Frogmore Cottage with the permission of Queen Elizabeth, who still owned the property.

Even after their permanent move to the US, the arrangement remained unchanged.

However, the couple repaid the estimated $3.2 million of public funds spent on the initial renovations through the Sovereign Grant.

Since their relocation, Harry and Meghan have only stayed at Frogmore Cottage twice.

Once was for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Celebration in June 2022, and the other was after the Queen’s death in September of the same year.

In early 2023, just six months after the Queen’s passing and Prince Charles III’s ascension to the throne, the couple was asked to vacate the cottage.

A spokesperson for the couple confirmed the request, which came shortly after the release of their Netflix docuseries in December 2022 and the publication of the Queen’s journal, Extra, in January 2023.

Both projects caused embarrassment for the royals, as they faced various allegations from Harry and Meghan, including lack of support during Meghan’s media attacks and an alleged physical altercation between Harry and Prince William.

With their departure from Frogmore Cottage, Harry and Meghan will need to make private accommodation arrangements if they wish to visit England.

They may also have the option to stay with Prince Charles or another royal relative in a residence with full-time security, such as Clarence House or Buckingham Palace.

Security has become a significant concern for Harry while in England.

When he stepped back from his royal duties in 2020, his 24-hour state-funded protection was removed.

Previously, Frogmore Cottage’s location within the grounds of Windsor Palace provided security under the broader palace security measures.

In his journal, Harry shared how Queen Elizabeth offered him the use of Frogmore Cottage and how he and Meghan transformed it into their home.

According to Harry, the Queen described the house as a bit of a construction site, but encouraged them to see its potential.

The couple fell in love with the charming property, which was conveniently located near the Royal Burial Ground.

Earlier this year, there were reports in the British press suggesting that Frogmore Cottage could become the new residence for Prince Andrew, Prince Charles’ younger brother, who retired from public life in 2022 following allegations of s**ual abuse and his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Currently, Prince Andrew resides at Royal Lodge, a sprawling mansion on the Windsor Palace estate, which was previously Queen Elizabeth’s residence.
