Members of the royal family gathered on Saturday, April 17, at St George’s Chapel for the funeral of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away on April 9 at the age of 99.

As the longest-serving British consort in royal history, Prince Philip’s life and legacy were honored by his beloved relatives.

Among them was the Duchess of Cambridge, who made a poignant gesture to keep her grandmother-in-law, the Queen, close to her heart by wearing royal family heirlooms.

Attending the ceremony alongside her husband, Prince William, Catherine chose an elegant and meaningful outfit for Prince Philip’s funeral.

She wore the iconic Japanese pearl choker necklace, paying tribute to both the Queen and the late Princess Diana.

The four-strand necklace, featuring a central diamond clasp, was commissioned by the Queen herself and made from pearls gifted to her by the Japanese government.

It is worth noting that Diana had previously worn this beautiful necklace to a state banquet in 1982.

In addition to the pearl choker, Catherine adorned a pair of pearl earrings, believed to be the Queen’s Bahrain pearl drop earrings.

These earrings, made with pearls gifted to the Queen by the Hakeem of Bahrain as a wedding present, held sentimental value as she wore them at Prince Philip’s funeral.

The Duchess also opted for a veiled fascinator, reminiscent of the late Princess of Wales’ iconic headpiece she wore at Grace Kelly’s funeral.

Despite their six-decade age difference, the Duchess and Prince Philip shared a special bond, along with a similar sense of humor and dedication to duty.

They often stood close to each other on the Buckingham Palace balcony during the Trooping of the Colour, exchanging jokes on several occasions.

A touching photo captured the Duchess of Cambridge laughing heartily at one of Philip’s comments.

Prince William acknowledged the bond between his wife and grandfather in his tribute, expressing gratitude for the kindness Philip showed Catherine.

Before meeting Prince William, Catherine had a sweet connection to her future grandfather-in-law when she completed her Duke of Edinburgh award.

In 2012, she joined Philip and the Queen for a day of royal engagements in Leicester, traveling together on the royal train.

During their time together, Catherine and Philip seemed to enjoy each other’s company, engaging in conversation and laughter.

The Duchess even expressed that she was being well looked after during the visit.

At the funeral service in St George’s Chapel, the Duchess arrived early, joining Prince William and other members of the royal family.

The service was limited to 30 guests due to coronavirus restrictions.

Led by Her Majesty the Queen and her four children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward, the royal family paid their respects.

Also in attendance were the spouses of Charles, Anne, and Edward – the Duchess of Cornwall, Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Lawrence, and the Countess of Wessex, respectively.

Prince William and Harry’s royal cousins, Peter Phillips, Zara and Mike Tyndall, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, Lady Louise Windsor, and James, Vice-Count Severn, were also present.

The funeral service marked the end of an era as the Duke peacefully passed away at the age of 99 on April 9 at Windsor Castle.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s choice to wear the Queen and Princess Diana’s heirlooms served as a heartfelt tribute to her late grandfather-in-law and the lasting connections he shared with both her and the royal family.
