Camilla’s Title as Queen Consort Under Scrutiny Ahead of King Charles III’s Coronation
Speculation is growing that Camilla, the wife of King Charles III, may have the word “consort” removed from her title ahead of the royal coronation in May.
While there has been no official confirmation from Buckingham Palace, Royal Correspondent Richard Palmer suggests that a change is on the horizon.
Speaking on the Daily Express Royal Roundup, Palmer noted that some papers already refer to Camilla as the Queen, and he believes they will eventually drop the “consort” designation.
In the United Kingdom, previous Queen consorts, such as Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra, have been known simply as the Queen.
Camilla’s improved standing within the royal family over the years has contributed to the possibility of her title change.

Following the death of Charles’ former wife, Princess Diana, Camilla has become a pillar of strength for the royal family, particularly after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
The decision to remove Camilla’s title as consort will depend on the public’s acceptance of her as Queen.
Palmer suggests that the long reign of Queen Elizabeth II, who was known simply as the Queen by many, has paved the way for this change.
The process of dropping Camilla’s title aims to create distance between the late Queen’s legacy and how Camilla is described.
By the time of the coronation, she may be referred to as just the Queen.
In the past, the Queen’s mother, the wife of King George VI, was known as Queen Elizabeth or the Queen.
Later, to avoid confusion with their names, she became known as the Queen Mother.
Similar speculation has surrounded Camilla’s title since Charles’ ascension to the throne was anticipated.
However, the Queen’s statement on the 70th anniversary of her reign expressed her desire for Camilla to be known as Queen Consort.
The Queen’s support for Camilla was evident when she appointed the Duchess as a Royal Lady of the most noble order of the Garter to the monarchy.
This gesture was seen by many royal commentators as an indication that Camilla would indeed be granted the status of Queen Consort.
Over the years, attitudes towards Camilla have shifted significantly.
In the 17 years since her marriage to Charles, public opinion has become more favorable, especially considering the tragic circumstances surrounding Princess Diana’s death.
