What Meghan and Kate Middleton’s daughters have in common
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have welcomed their second child.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the birth of their baby daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on June 6.
The name of the youngest royal is a homage to two of the royal family’s most legendary ladies, Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana. In their daughter’s birth announcement, Harry and Meghan discussed the meaning behind her name.
“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet,” the Sussexes’ announcement explained. “Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.”
Lilibet is the Queen’s family nickname, and it was initially used when Princess Elizabeth was a child and couldn’t say her name correctly.

mWhile Princess Diana’s grandchildren never met their paternal grandmother, they are growing up with the name of the late Princess of Wales. Both Prince Harry and Prince William have given their girls middle names in memory of their mother, who died in 1997.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge revealed the name Charlotte Elizabeth Diana two days after the birth of their second child in 2015.
Princess Charlotte’s name, like Lili’s, is a tribute to both her grandmother Princess Diana and her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth.
Diana is the name of the Roman goddess of fertility, childbirth, hunting, and the moon, and it derives from an Indo-European root word that means “divine.”
Charlotte, unlike her cousin Lili, is a princess, formally recognized as Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
After her brother Archie and Prince Harry, she is eighth in line for the throne. The three children of Prince William and Catherine rank ahead of them.
Charlotte’s parents congratulated the Sussex family on Instagram on Sunday afternoon.
“We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili,” the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrote, with a black and white portrait of the Sussex family. “Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie.”
The granddaughters of Prince Charles aren’t the only royal great-grandchildren who appear to have been named after the Queen. Elizabeth is also the middle name of Isla Phillips, the eldest grandchild of the monarch, Peter Phillips, and Zara Tindall’s second daughter, Lena Tindall.
While Elizabeth is the name of two of Britain’s most successful and longest-reigning queens, it also has alternate meanings. The mother of John the Baptist in the Bible is named Elizabeth, which comes from the Hebrew Elisheba, which means “God is my oath.”
