Were Meghan and Harry paid for the Oprah interview?
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey aired in the United Kingdom on Monday, with the pair making a series of shocking accusations against the Royal Family that have made global headlines.
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was allegedly paid $7 million for her recent broadcast interview with Oprah Winfrey, according to social media users. While the rights to broadcast the interview were allegedly acquired for millions of dollars, the production firm behind the interview said that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not paid.
There has been conjecture on both sides, but Oprah addressed it right at the start of the interview, clarifying that the pair did not receive any compensation for coming out.
She said: “Before we get in to it, I just want to make it clear to everybody that even though we’re neighbours … that there has not been an agreement, you don’t know what I’m going to ask, and there is no subject that’s off-limits and you are not getting paid for this interview.”
“All of that is correct,” Meghan responded.

“We can confirm that there was no payment of any kind to Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex or any of their charities for the interview or licensing of footage,” Chelsea Hettrick, a spokesperson for Harpo Productions, told Reuters via email.
It premiered on CBS on March 7, 2021, to a global audience of at least 49 million people. The couple accused the royal family of racism, mistreatment, and internal strife.
The pair also spoke about mental health, feeling imprisoned in their positions, and their connection with other royals.
The Duchess of Sussex characterized her time as a royal as “almost unsurvivable,” to the point that she no longer “wanted to be alive.”
As a member of the British royal family, Harry told Winfrey that he felt “trapped.”
“I didn’t see a way out. I was trapped, but I didn’t know I was trapped,” he added.
“Trapped within the system, like the rest of my family are,” Prince Harry said, adding that his father, Prince Charles, and brother, Prince William, are also caught up in the system. “They don’t get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that.”
Although no money changed hands for the Sussexes, the interview was nevertheless huge business for the television networks. According to the Wall Street Journal, CBS paid “a license fee of between $7 million and $9 million for the rights to air Ms. Winfrey’s interview with Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex, according to people familiar with the pact,” for the rights to air the program in America.
For a reported £1 million, ITV was able to acquire exclusive rights to the interview in the United Kingdom.
According to reports, the network “has rights to license the special in international markets,” as part of the deal with Winfrey’s production firm, Harpo Productions, which it has done in the UK, with ITV airing the special tonight.
However, Harry and Meghan have struck a contract with Netflix to create a number of shows and series for an estimated £100 million.
Meghan Markle has been the subject of unwelcome intrusion into her personal life for a long time. She was subjected to unjustified criticism after entering the royal family, and she ended up suing a newspaper when portions of a private letter addressed to her father were released after her May 2018 wedding.
