Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Popularity Plunge Exceeds Charles’ After Diana Divorce
Since their royal departure, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have fallen lower in public polls in the United Kingdom than Prince Charles did when he divorced Princess Diana.
Prince Charles’ affair and marriage to Camilla Parker Bowles, according to Ipsos Mori data, resulted in a 40-point decline in polls on whether he would make an ideal king.
In answer to a question regarding whether he would make a suitable king, the first in line to the throne dropped from 82 percent support in 1991 to 41 percent support in 1996.
The statistics are similar to, but less severe than, the recent drop in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s popularity in the United Kingdom.
Prince Harry’s polling fall since leaving the United Kingdom, dubbed ‘Megxit’ by the press, has been even more severe, with the Duke of Sussex’s approval ratings plummeting by 50 points.

The Duke of Sussex’s popularity rating in the United Kingdom has fallen 50 points since his engagement to Meghan Markle was announced in November 2017.
According to Newsweek, the fall in ratings is due to the royal couple’s choice to leave Palace responsibilities, with the Duke of Sussex’s ratings reaching an all-time low in mid-2021.
Meghan’s drop in British popularity has been less severe since she started off lower, but it has brought her to a similar position, from 55% in October 2019 to 32% today.
With their son Archie and daughter Lilibet, the Sussexes currently live in a $14.5 million mansion in Montecito, California.
The data comes from continuous YouGov surveys that track royal family members’ approval ratings, and the most recent batch is based on a sample interview with 1,489 people.
After starring in a blockbuster interview with talk show host Oprah Winfrey in March of this year, Prince Harry’s popularity continued to plummet.
Prince Charles’ popularity sits above both his son and daughter-in-law at 45 per cent although polling on whether he will make a good king has trended down in recent months.
Like Harry, the next-in-line to the throne had been polling well, with Ipsos Mori data indicating that 82 percent of Britons thought he would make a fine king in 1991, compared to 5% who did not.
However, in 1992, an explosive book produced with Diana’s secret backing by author Andrew Morton disclosed his affair with Camilla, who is now his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall.
The Queen is the most popular royal at the moment, followed by Prince William, the third in line to the throne, and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.
Despite the fact that Prince Harry and Meghan are not well-liked by the British press, their fame has remained strong, with the couple frequently generating headlines.
