Prince Charles recalls being charmed by ‘dazzling’ Barbra Streisand

Since their first meeting almost 50 years ago, the Prince of Wales remembers being completely charmed by the American actress and singer. Ms. Streisand’s song, “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” was included in a Hospital Broadcasting Association broadcast, prompting Charles’ remarks.

According to the Times, while on the show, the Prince of Wales remembered meeting Streisand when he was younger. “I have always been a great admirer of the incredibly versatile American actress and singer Barbra Streisand.”

“Back in 1974, when I was serving in the Royal Navy … as a young lieutenant in the frigate HMS Jupiter, we called into the United States navy’s base in San Diego, California … when I heard that she was currently making the film [Funny Lady, a sequel to Funny Girl] in the Warner Brothers Studios … I was lucky enough to visit the set and to meet her there.”

“This next song, Don’t Rain on my Parade, is therefore full of special memories of — I hardly dare think of it now — 47 years ago.”

Prince Charles expressed his admiration for Streisand, saying he had “special memories” of her and was enthralled by her “dazzling” ability. He was 26 and one of the world’s most eligible bachelors at the time. Streisand was six years his senior.

They became close over time. Streisand performed at a Wembley performance in 1994 to raise money for his Prince’s Trust charity. They attended the same gala event in Los Angeles that year, and she allegedly paid him a visit in 1995, three years after he divorced Diana, Princess of Wales, at Highgrove, his Gloucestershire estate.

Prince Charles also emphasized the significance of hospital radio.

He added: “When we have been dealing with the effect of this dreadful pandemic, the role of hospital radio has been even more important … in providing comfort and companionship, and in raising people’s spirits when that is needed.”

Don’t Rain on My Parade, was included in the musical Funny Girl and helped her win an Oscar.

Streisand joked about their relationship during a 2019 performance in Hyde Park, stating, “If I had played my cards right, I could have been the first Jewish princess.”

The show includes 13 of Charles’ favorite songs, which will be broadcast on over 180 hospital radio stations.

The prince’s other choices include the Three Degrees’ “Givin’ Up Givin’ In,” which they played during his 30th birthday celebration at Buckingham Palace. The song “long ago used to provide me with an irresistible urge to get up and dance,” Charles revealed.
