According to a new book, Melania Trump accuses Roger Stone, her husband’s longstanding friend and former advisor, of releasing nude photographs from her modeling days.

CNN reporter Kate Bennett says in her book, Free, Melania, that the first lady “still refuses to believe” her husband was involved in the release. Bennett also confirms rumors that the president and first lady in the White House have separate bedrooms.

Melania believes Stone was responsible for releasing nude pictures of her to the New York Post in 2016, according to a copy acquired by The Guardian.

“Melania has not commented on how she thinks they got into the hands of the tabloid and on to the cover,” writes Bennett, according to the Guardian. “But friends say she still refuses to believe Trump would do that to her. As for Stone, she’s not so sure.”

Nude pictures of Melania Trump adorned the cover and inner pages of the New York Post three months before Election Day 2016.

At the time, theories claimed that Trump or someone close to him was behind the leak in order to divert attention away from Trump’s inflammatory remarks against the mother of slain Muslim American soldier Humayun Khan.

Ms Bennett writes in the book, which The Guardian has read ahead of publication, that “the theory goes … that Trump was trying to head off a bad week on the campaign.”

Melania Trump took the pictures in the 1990s when she was a struggling Slovenian-born model attempting to break into New York’s fashion industry. In 1996, some of the photographs were featured in a French men’s magazine.

Stone’s wife Nydia refuted the allegation, telling the Guardian, “The suspicion asserted in Kate Bennett’s book is categorically false and completely illogical.”

“The ludicrous claim is an obvious attempt to drive a wedge between my husband and the president whom he has supported so loyally for the last 30 years,” Nydia added.

Mr Stone had no official position with the Trump campaign at the time, but he remained close to the Republican nominee, who is notorious for attempting to divert attention away from bad news.

In the 1980s, Stone encouraged real estate mogul Trump to enter politics, and he became well-known in political circles for his aggressive campaigning and mastery of dirty political tactics.

Mr Stone faces jail after being found guilty of obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and lying to Congress about his communication with Wikileaks during the presidential campaign.

Then White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham claimed in an email to the Guardian that the book “includes many false details and opinions, showing Ms Bennett spoke to many anonymous people who don’t know the first lady.”

The nude pictures of Melania Trump that appeared in the New York Post sparked a flurry of speculation about who leaked them and why. The most straightforward reason was to humiliate and disgrace Melania Trump, who was not used to being in the limelight at the time and was still attempting to recover from the controversy of plagiarizing Michelle Obama’s address at the Republican National Convention.

Ms. Bennett’s book also provides fresh information on the Trumps’ White House living quarters, which previously had been believed to have separate bedrooms.

When the New York Post approached Trump about the pictures, he didn’t seem like an enraged husband, despite the fact that his wife’s reputation and privacy had been assaulted.

“Melania was one of the most successful models and she did many photo shoots, including for covers and major magazines,” Trump told the Post. “This was a picture taken for a European magazine prior to my knowing Melania. In Europe, pictures like this are very fashionable and common.”
