Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has once again made headlines with her choice of jewelry.

This time, it’s her stunning aquamarine ring that has caught the attention of royal watchers and jewelry enthusiasts alike.

But what many don’t know is that this ring has a rather intriguing history.

The 13-carat emerald-cut aquamarine ring originally belonged to Princess Diana.

After her divorce from Prince Charles in 1996, Diana replaced her iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring with this exquisite piece.

Valued at $90,000, the ring was often paired with a matching aquamarine and pearl bracelet.

Fast forward more than two decades later, and the aquamarine ring resurfaced on Meghan Markle’s right hand during her wedding reception with Prince Harry in May 2018.

The clean geometric lines of the emerald cut complemented her sleek reception dress and modern Cartier earrings.

However, it turns out that the ring is not part of the royal family collection.

It was a personal item that Diana possessed, and despite wearing it, Meghan does not get to keep it.

By law, she cannot take it out of the UK.

Currently, the ring is owned by the Spencer family, meaning it will eventually belong to Diana’s sisters and nieces.

Interestingly, the annual royal gift list does not mention any wedding presents.

While it includes the jewelry Meghan received from various official trips, such as Ireland, New Zealand, and Fiji, there is no reference to the Sussex wedding.

The post also links to the current gifts policy, which defines official gifts as those received during an official engagement or in connection with an official royal role.

Apparently, a wedding is not considered an official engagement in this context.

Aquamarines held a special place in Diana’s collection, many of which were acquired during her years of royal marriage.

One notable addition to her jewelry box was a cocktail ring featuring an emerald-cut aquamarine with diamond accents on the band.

This stunning piece, gifted by Lucia Fletcher de Lima and made by Asprey, arrived in Diana’s possession around 1996.

Meghan Markle first showcased Princess Diana’s aquamarine ring on her wedding day in 2018, as she waved to photographers while Harry drove them to their evening reception in a vintage Jaguar convertible.

She later wore the ring during a royal tour of Tonga, where she had a private audience with King Tupu VI and Queen Nanispoh.

The Duchess of Sussex once again donned the ring for an official dinner in Tonga in October of the same year.

Recently, Meghan was seen wearing the aquamarine ring once more at the 2022 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Gala, where she and Prince Harry spoke on stage.

Paired with a white dress, the ring added an elegant touch to her ensemble.

Her earrings for the evening were from Carolina Herrera.
