Since cutting relations with the British royal family and heading out of the country, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have faced criticism.

Many royal fans and commentators have blasted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for spending taxpayers’ money on their lavish luxury home in Santa Barbara, California.

Although the two secured a lucrative contract with Netflix after purchasing the Montecito home, they were previously funded by Prince Charles.

According to Express, Graham Smith, CEO of the anti-monarchist party Republic, the pair should refund British taxpayers.

“They have plenty of money to refund the government for all the stuff we financed when they were working royals so they will spend an ordinary person’s annual income on their mansion every month. “This covers security and other wedding-related expenses,” he said.

“It also contains the rent for Frogmore Cottage, which they should be charged. They have now paid for the repairs and they say they will live in it when they are here,” he said.

“Is it being charged at market rates? Why are they still allowed to have that house? When they spend too much money on their own house, the claim that they can’t totally break free from a tax-funded lifestyle is simply nonsense,” he added.

He went on to insist that the couple make the price they pay to keep Frogmore Cottage public.

“The Crown Estate owns Frogmore, which does not belong to the Royal Family. So Meghan and Harry should never have been given the house and should have paid for the repairs up front,” Smith added.

“They were done to their specifications and so that they could live there. Ok so they have now paid for it, they have said they have done so because they can now afford it ,” he added.

“They could have always afforded it, so their excuses are a bit rich. They are apparently still going to have use of that house, exclusive use of that house.  So, we need to know what rent they are paying and why the Crown Estate allows them to retain that property when they are not living in it,” he said.
