Meghan Markle not entirely ‘to blame as Harry’s real self emerges’, writer claims

According to Michael Gove’s wife, the world is finally seeing the “real Prince Harry” and Meghan Markle is not “the only one to blame” for the separation between the pair and the rest of the Royal Family.

Columnist Sarah Vine thinks Prince Harry’s true personality has emerged as a result of his marriage to Meghan Markle, particularly the “deep resentment” he feels for the way his mother was treated.

In a podcast interview, Harry said that he wanted to leave the royal family while he was in his twenties because “look what it did to my mum.” During an appearance on The Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Prince Harry revealed numerous details about his upbringing, including inheriting his parents’ grief. He also claimed Charles’ parenting caused him “genetic pain and suffering.”

Ms Vine, who is married to the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said in her Mail on Sunday column that although Harry has changed since meeting Meghan, he has not been “brainwashed” by her.

Instead, he is “just starting to be himself”

She added: “I don’t think she [Meghan] is the only one to blame. I believe Harry is just as complicit. It’s only that we’ve never really wanted to accept it because in our minds he is still that tragic young boy at his mother’s funeral.

“But that Harry is gone now and the man we see before us is a very different kettle of fish. Far from being brainwashed by Meghan, I think he’s just starting to be himself.”

“It now transpires that for a long time he has hated being a Royal. He has intimated as much on many occasions, in particular when he was a serving member of the Armed Forces.

He said: “There is no blame. I don’t think we should be pointing the finger or blaming anybody, but certainly when it comes to parenting, if I’ve experienced some form of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that perhaps my father or my parents had suffered, I’m going to make sure I break that cycle so that I don’t pass it on, basically.

“It’s a lot of genetic pain and suffering that gets passed on anyway so we as parents should be doing the most we can to try and say ‘you know what, that happened to me, I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen to you’.”

Ms Vine said that he had obviously “harboured deep resentment” towards his father and family for the “unfair way” Diana was handled.

“Again, we’ve seen glimpses of that before, but last week he finally spelled it out in detail. Whether consciously or unconsciously, he married someone who he knew would never take to public life in Britain – indeed who was deeply unsuited to it – and who, ultimately, would provide him with the perfect excuse to leave.”

The more you think about it, the clearer it seems – whatever much Meghan viewed Harry as a way in, he saw her as a way out, a chance to leave from a position that he plainly regarded toxic.

She added: “Harry has always claimed he stepped down as a working Royal and moved to America to protect his own family. That he had no choice, that it was the only sane option. But if you ask me it’s got nothing to do with that. He did it to pursue his dream. His own dream of freedom – which is fast becoming the Royal Family’s ultimate nightmare.”
