Although Marilyn Monroe is remembered as a Hollywood icon and began her journey as a model before signing with Twentieth Century-Fox in 1946, she had moments of vulnerability and insecurity just like any other artist.

In a memoir adaptation titled Marilyn and Me, photographer Lawrence Schiller, who captured her in nde photographs, shares insights into her life.

Despite her on-screen charm, she was deeply unsatisfied in her personal life.

Monroe was envious of Elizabeth Taylor, and her decision to partake in a nde photo shoot was aimed at ensuring Fox Studios gave her the recognition she deserved.

Hoping to steal the spotlight from Taylor, Marilyn wanted her nde photos to be the center of attention when published.

At the time, she earned only 90% of what Elizabeth Taylor made.

The photo shoot was a calculated attempt to gain the same level of publicity Taylor received while dating her co-star, Richard Burton.

Monroe believed the $25,000 offered by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner for her nde photo was well-deserved.

Even though she took pride in her looks, she was disappointed in the reliance on her beauty for success and the absence of Academy Award nominations.

Marilyn also confided in Schiller about her desire to have a child and her fear of becoming like her mother, who spent much of her life in mental institutions.

Monroe’s upbringing in foster care weighed heavily on her mind.

The details surrounding her death in 1962 due to a barbiturate overdose remain a mystery, with speculation about suicide or homicide.

Despite her fame, Marilyn Monroe pondered her identity and how her real self, Norma Jeane, connected to her public persona.

She confessed to Schiller that becoming Marilyn wasn’t her intention – it just happened.

She wanted more than the success that came from being a sex symbol and desired to demonstrate her ability to achieve publicity without relying on her appearance or scandal.

Tragically, their conversation would be their last, as Monroe was found dead the following day.
