Johnny Depp ‘tortured’ teenage Leonardo DiCaprio
Leonardo DiCaprio was just a youngster when he worked on the set of “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” alongside Johnny Depp in 1993.
And now, Johnny Depp has revealed that he would ‘torture’ Leonardo DiCaprio on the set of the blockbuster drama, which was shot at what he called a ‘dark time’ in his life.
‘It was a hard time for me, that film, for some reason. I don’t know why ,’ Johnny told the audience during the 51st Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Thursday.
‘I tortured him. I really did. He was always talking about these videos games, you know? I told you it was kind of a dark period. “No, I will not give you a drag of my cigarette while you hide from your mother again, Leo”.’
Despite expressing his displeasure with DiCaprio, now 41, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor praised the younger star for his strong work ethic.

Meanwhile, Leonardo earlier said that he felt like he had ‘won the lottery’ when he was given the opportunity to work with Depp at such an early age.
“I’d say the absolute truth is that I respect Leo a lot. He worked really hard on that film and spent a lot of time researching. He came to set and he was ready to work hard and all his ducks were in a row.”
Nonetheless, Leo was nominated for his first Academy Award for his portrayal as young Arnie, and Johnny acknowledged, “the absolute truth is that I respect Leo a lot.”
‘He worked really hard on that film and spent a lot of time researching. He came to set and he was ready to work hard and all his ducks were in a row.’
Although Depp did not disclose the causes for his “hard time” in the “dark period” of his life, it was about the same time he separated with his three-year fiancée, Winona Ryder.
At the annual film festival, Johnny was honored with the Maltin Modern Master Award for his contributions to the cinema business.
Depp went out with model “it” girl Kate Moss in 1994. Moss and Depp divorced a few years later, and Depp spent the following 14 years with Vanessa Paradis, the mother of his two children. Depp and Paradis divorced in 2012. In 2015, Depp married American actress Amber Heard.
