Meghan Markle is reflecting on 2020 and highlighting one of the key sources of pleasure and support that helped her survive the difficult year both at home and across the world.

Meghan, 39, stated in her foreword to The Mayhew Foundation’s annual year in review that the love of her dogs helped her cope with being away from her loved ones — and she wasn’t alone.

“When I reflect on 2020, I always come back to the importance of community and connection,” the Duchess of Sussex wrote.

“We may have been forced apart, but we found new ways to be close and to support each other through this shared crisis. For many of us, this was made all the easier with our pets by our side.”

Mayhew is a London-based animal welfare organization that works to improve the lives of dogs and cats. It, among other things, offers free and low-cost veterinary services and collaborates with the community to find permanent homes for dogs in need.

It is one of two patronages the 39-year-old has kept after stepping down as a senior royal with her husband, Prince Harry, in early 2020.

She has also continued to promote Smart Works, a U.K. charity that assists jobless and disadvantaged women in re-entering the labor force by offering coaching and professional clothing for job interviews.

Mayhew is obviously a passion for the animal-loving Duchess, who became patron of the United Kingdom’s animal protection organization in January 2019. She commended Mayhew for offering “resources that people and pets need to stay together and persevere through hardships.”

The Bench author also expressed her expectations for the animal-focused charity as we recover from the COVID-19 epidemic.

“As we collectively build to the future, my sincere hope is that we do so with ongoing support and appreciation for organizations like Mayhew, who continue their vital work in days of crisis and in days of calm,” she continued. “Their commitment to the cause of animal welfare is steadfast and their effect on our community wellbeing is self-evident.”

She noted “the therapeutic effect of having your animal by your side and the solace and comfort you found in their company.”

Meghan’s involvement with animal rescue dates back to the adoption of her first dog, Bogart, and later her beloved beagle, Guy. She and Harry also acquired a black Labrador following their royal wedding in 2018.

Her son with Harry, 36, seems to have inherited his mother’s love of animals. Last year, a source told PEOPLE that Archie, now 2, is “best friends with his dogs. They make him laugh and are gentle with him.”
