Sophie, Countess of Wessex, is expected to receive the prestigious title of Duchess of Edinburgh, a move that has left Meghan Markle envious.

The 57-year-old Sophie, who is married to Prince Edward, the Queen’s youngest son, had a close relationship with her late mother-in-law, often referring to her as “Mama.”

Since the Queen’s passing, Sophie has been seen attending several memorial services, appearing somber and tearful.

With the passing of Prince Philip, it is now speculated that Edward, 58, may inherit his late father’s title, the Duke of Edinburgh, following his mother’s death.

This would make Sophie a Duchess.

The decision ultimately lies in the hands of the new King, Charles III, as reported by the Telegraph.

It is believed that Prince Philip expressed his wishes for Edward to inherit the title, and King Charles III has agreed to honor those wishes.

Currently, Edward is the only one of the Queen’s sons without a dukedom.

While it is expected that Charles will keep his promise to his late father, Edward has expressed some doubts in the past.

In an interview with the BBC, he stated, “Of course, it will depend on whether or not the Prince of Wales, when he becomes King, whether he’ll do that, so we’ll wait and see.

So yes, it will be quite a challenge taking that on.”

Edward and Sophie have been seen together at various memorial services for the Queen.

During one such event, Sophie was seen comforting her sister-in-law, Princess Annette.

The touching moment occurred as the family observed the Queen’s coffin being carried into the Palace of Hollerood House in Edinburgh.

Following the procession, the Queen’s coffin was brought to Buckingham Palace, where several senior royals were waiting inside.

Sophie, the wife of the Queen’s youngest son, showed unwavering support to her husband as she joined the royal family in escorting the Queen’s coffin down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

The solemn procession covered a distance of 1,200 yards and was witnessed by hundreds of well-wishers lining the city’s oldest streets.

Sophie, dressed in a black suit and matching headpiece, joined her fellow royals for the procession, while the Queen’s children walked behind the hearse carrying their mother to St Giles’ Cathedral.

King Charles led his siblings on foot, followed by the Queen consort and other members of the monarchy in cars.

The procession was met with cheers, clapping, and cries of “God save the King” as it made its way through the Scottish capital.

Sophie’s close relationship with her mother-in-law was well-known, and she was often regarded as the monarch’s favorite family member after marrying Prince Edward.

The Countess formed a strong bond with the royal family, particularly after the loss of her own mother to stomach cancer in 2005.

Following the death of Prince Philip, Sophie became a source of support and strength for the Queen.

In addition to her grief over Prince Philip’s passing, Sophie has also openly spoken about a tragic miscarriage she experienced in 2001.

Her mother’s death in 2005 further deepened her sorrow.

Last year, during a speech for Women’s Institute members, Sophie shared her personal journey of grief and loss.

As the anticipation grows for Edward to inherit the title of Duke of Edinburgh, all eyes are on Sophie, who will likely become the Duchess of Edinburgh.

While Meghan Markle may feel envious of Sophie’s position, it is undeniable that Sophie has earned her place within the royal family through her unwavering support and close relationship with the Queen.
