Rob Lowe Says His Sex Tape With A 16-Year-Old was the ‘best thing’ that ever happened to him
Rob Lowe, a Hollywood celebrity, has no regrets over his sex tape scandal, which he claims led to his recovery and eventual happiness.
A home sex film featuring the actor was released to the public more than two decades ago. Lowe stars in a sensual meeting with a then-16-year-old Atlanta girl named Lena Jan Parsons (known as Jan) and her 23-year-old pal Tara Seburt in the grainy footage.
Lowe met the two ladies at an Atlanta bar and then drove them to his Hilton hotel, where he videotaped their sexual experience.
Lowe said after the tape’s publication that he had no idea Jan was underage. He was never charged with a crime after settling a lawsuit with her family.
Despite the backlash, Lowe confessed this week on The Jess Cagle Play that he doesn’t regret it while promoting his new stage show Stories I Only Tell My Friends: LIVE!

Lowe, 55, said, “I think it’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Honestly, I do, because it got me sober. Sober got me married. I’ve been married 29 years and I have two great sons, so I don’t think any of that happens without going through that scandal.”
“It was one of the reasons I got sober,” he added. “I woke up one day and was like, ‘What am I doing with my life? 29 years in.’”
After the incident damaged his career, he returned to acting on the small screen in 1999 with the political drama The West Wing.
“The problem was, I didn’t make any money off of it like everybody does now,” Lowe said of the recording to Cagle, likely referring to recent sex tape controversies involving Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton, whose own sex tapes were made public. “I was too stupid.”
However, based on his 2012 novel Stories I Only Tell My Friends, Lowe has been able to merge his experiences into a live touring act.
“I talk a lot about recovery in the show, because I think it’s good to see the examples,” he remarked.
“I needed the examples when I was trying to change my life, and it’s moving because it’s a serious, literal life-and-death issue, but it’s also really funny. I do a whole thing about how I loved going to rehab.”
